BFCA awards

Speaking of critical effusion augmented by kneepads, the 12th annual Critics Choice Awards, organized and promoted by the Broadcast Film Critics Organization, is handing its awards out tonight in a ceremony at the Santa Monica Civic auditorium. E! will air the show on 1.20.07. I guess I'll post the winners sometime tonight, but if the BFCA-ers were to suddenly disappear off the face of the earth, I would weep and grieve, yes...but I would wake up the next morning and get on with my life.

So here's what I love about this: Poland has been waving his hands dismissively at every critics group in the country that doesn't jibe with how he sees this year's Oscar race going down ("irrelevant" is a word that's been getting tossed around quite a bit), and yet now the very critics group that he fronts, a group that is so proud of being an Oscar xerox that the last time I watched their award show they actually wrote copy for host Dennis Miller to chirp that 90% of all Oscar winners were BFCA winners first (or some equally asinine stat), has gone against the perceived grain and did not give its best picture trophy to assumed front-runner Dreamgirls. So now will Dave a) throw his own organization under the bus as "no longer having its finger on the pulse of the Academy" or b) will he bail ship and begin stumping for the Scorsese picture? Frankly I'm finding everyone fighting over (as Drew McWeeny beautifully put it) "whose got bigger crystal balls" is more entertaining than most of the films being campaigned for.
