"A friend who visited Atlanta this past weekend tells me that Little Children was one of the options at her hotel for in-room pay-per-viewing. So I can't help thinking: No matter how many Oscar nominations the movie may receive on Tuesday, has New Line already written off the movie's prospects as a theatrical release?" -- recent entry on Joe Leydon's Moving Picture Blog.

It's interesting how New Line bankrolls films by Kubrick disciples (BIRTH, LITTLE CHILDREN)and then summarily dumps them.
Would Picturehouse have done any better with marketing the film?

I wouldn't panic just yet. Hotels are often the very very earliest to get movies for pay-per-view, beating even DVD and normal consumer pay-per-view. In all likelihood, this was planned before the movie was even released in theatres.
I once saw WAKING NED DEVINE on an airplane while it was still in theatres. This edition carried Overseas Filmgroup's original title WAKING NED, instead of the full "Christian name" title Fox Searchlight gave it; I figured that similarly, this was a contractual sale OF made before Fox bought the U.S. rights to the film.

At this point, Little Children is better off coming out on DVD - especially if Jackie Earle Haley gets an Oscar nomination. People are more willing to get the DVD of a title like this than see it in the theater - especially people who live far from the art house. So why let all that good hype from award season go to waste - especially since theatrical releases aren't the profit machine anymore.

Geez, I live in Atlanta and have been waiting for "Little Children" to be released here - it still hasn't been! Do I have to get a hotel room to actually see it?

Todd Field and is as suburban as his subject(s); and much like his subject(s) he feels he alone is special, and without precedent.
Art is here to say otherwise.
But then again, Field has no idea what art is.

well New Line hasn't given up on the film since the DVD isn't due out until April 24.

A new twist on the old phrase, "Get a room!"
