"If you fail the first time, try, try, try, try, try, try, try again." -- Peter O'Toole's reaction to being Best Actor nominated for Venus.

Oh, for God's sake, give O'Toole the award already. He gave a classy, subtle performance in a good little (though admittedly slight) film. Only Forest Whitaker gave an arguably better performance among the other nominees, and he'll have plenty of future opportunities for the big prize

Joe: we almost agree. I would have nominated "venus" for best original screenplay over "Babel" and "Lms" and Roger Michell over Inarritu for director and Jodie Whitaker over Hudson and Breslin for supporting actress and Leslie Philips over arkin and murphy for supporting actor. in other words, a very incisive, moving, bold, funny, TERRIFIC film with a powerfully vulnerable and deft performance by one of cinema's greatest actors.

Dobbsy, I'm not going to crap on Venus again and I agree with your estimation of Whitaker and of course O'Toole, but seriously, just between you and me, didn't the song "Put Your Records On" in the context of this film make you want to break things?

CJ: Yep, I'm laughing! Got me on that one! Now let's start a "bad moments in nominated films" thread. I'll start with these top 5 cringe-inducers:

1) Grandpa's body hauled around in the VW in LMS just like Grandma's body in National Lampoon Vacation.

2) Gimme Shelter used for the millionth time in a Scorsese film (TD).

3) Gael Garcia Bernal at the border in "Babel." (Well, EVERYTHING in "Babel" induced cringes.)

4) Jamie Foxx meets his long-lost daughter in "Dreamgirls."

5) John Lennon over-literal "Free the People" song over scenes of 60s relic idealist Michael Caine in COM.

As long as we agree on that damn song, go forth in peace and enjoy the hell out of Venus, my brother!

1) Greg Kinnear on the moped... because.... he.... just... has to get... where he's......GOING!!!
2) No real beefs with The Departed, but where the hell were they keeping Wahlberg for the whole 2nd half the film?
3) The whole bus full of Western tourist asshole cliches closely followed by the Adriana Barraza Suffering Desert Tortures of the Damned scene
4) The Eddie Murphy Takes His Pants Off and Melts Down on National TV scene.
5) The 'pull my finger' and 'strawberry cough' bits didn't work for me much though they didn't induce cringes exactly.

I liked the Pitt/Blanchett and Tokyo segments, but also found the whole Bernal/Barraza stuff in BABEL awful.

Talk about irritating...Inarritu didn't exactly do his countrymen any favors there...

Most cringe inducing moment in a nominated film? How about the rat crawling by at the very end of the Departed? That was too stupid beyond beli.... oh wait! I get it! BEcause they were both "rats". It makes so much more sense now.

I somehow missed that the first time.
Not the second time.
Not too pleased.

Further evidence that I'm probably a literal minded stooge: the rat didn't bother me. It felt more like a wink than the crux of the entire film. It was ham handed, but not a deal breaker.

dobbsy,

I've never felt that Scorsese really UNDERSTANDS the rock music he uses relentlessly in his films. Going back to "The End," mind you, in "I Call First."

"Gimme Shelter" was used, quite correctly, at the end of "Gimme Shelter." Marty's use of the Stones is something I would love to talk to him about, if he would respond to any of my phone calls.

Thus far he hasn't. Have you his number?

I'm very interested in Marty's Stones movie, considering he did an outstanding job with No Direction Home.

Dixie, I was under the impression that the film is going to be mainly about their most recent tour. Do you know if that's true? I still want to see it, but I would love to have seen a more encompassing history.

I think it is mostly about the last tour cj - I'll ask my Stones fanatic brother in law if he knows more about the project.

Charles Lane turned 102 today. I bet Keith makes it that long too. And Peter.

Truth be told, I don't care if Marty is directing the Stones sitting around playing bridge, I'd buy a ticket.
