January moviegoing looks one flatliner after another. The only film that may do some decent business this weekend is that Hilary Swank- saves-the-students-from-their-self-destructive-street- environment-and-street-attitudes movie Freedom Writers (Paramount). General awareness is 64, definite interest 32, first choice is 10. New Line's Code Name: The Cleaner with Cedric the Entertainer ("You want tact, get a tactician!") is at 47, 25 and 3. The animated Happily Never After (Lionsgate) is 53, 22 and 2.

Joe Carnahan's coming back with "Smokin' Aces" on the 26th; my love for both "Narc" and "Snatch" guarantees my spot in line for that one.

Jeez, the trailer for "Smokin' Aces" annoyed me almost as much as the trailer for "Balls of Fury."
I won't be seeing either of 'em.

I got to sneak in in a Smokin' Aces preview a few weeks ago, I didn't know the movie was coming out so late. Anyways, for what it's worth, I walked out of the movie. I'm a bit older now and I don't care for these "post-Tarantino" flicks anymore, but mainly most of the character's behaviour onscreen is illogical and ungrounded. The comedy moments were lame, though there was spright chuckles in the audience. And the whole thing was just too unrealistic for me to care about.

"What does Joe Carnahan have to do with Snatch?"
I think Gabriel was using Snatch as a second and separate reference from Narc, because of the similarity of Smokin' Aces to Guy Ritchie's work.

"Smokin' Aces" looks like a movie for people who thought "Domino" was too slow-paced.

If someone could explain to me something about NARC: why Ray Liotta's character (Oak?) is mad the whole movie, but yet he killed the cop, so why would he be mad, it makes no sense AT ALL....

CHILDREN OF MEN opens wide, so we'll see how well it does. I'm seeing it Saturday.
And SMOKIN' ACES is a lot of fun. It sure as fuck ain't DOMINO. For on, this has coherent scenes.

****Major "Narc"-related spoiler****
Oak didn't kill the cop; the cop killed himself. Oak's pissed off because his best friend had descended into a lifestyle that eventually consumed him. He was also trying to sell the "someone murdered him, and I'm gonna get the bastards" angle because he wanted to preserve Calvez's reputation as an upstanding guy.
