Beale on "Sunshine"

"Little Miss Sunshine hit so big because it isn't afraid to mix laughs and darkness. It's hip enough for the urban elites but not so hip that it's sailing over the heads of regular paying customers. It's a very sophisticated, equal-opportunity entertainer." -- observation from Lewis Beale's New York Newsday piece about why LMS went over as well as it did.

LMS is by far the most overrated piece of mediocrity to come down the pike in a long time. Comparisons to National Lampoon's Vacation are apt, except Vacation is much better and funnier because it's not made with the pretense to be more than it is.
In my humble opinion the energy is sucked out of LMS the moment Alan Arkin departs. He deserves the Oscar simply for breathing what little life there is into this 'comedy'.
Abigail and family have their 'eyes opened' to the truth about junior beauty pageants during the LMS pageant even though it's clear she has experience entering these contests? Grandpa is a heroin addict? Steve Carrel's ex-lover just happens to show up at the same gas station at the same moment as he does? The cop just happens to love porn? GIVE ME A BREAK! Any other movie without the Arty pretensions would be torn apart by critics for this bunk. Sorry - I don't get it! If this wins Best Picture, the Academy will have sunk to an all-time low.

I guess Lewis Beale has never seen a David Lynch film? For starters? What the fuck is he talking about?

Well since I just bet 50 quid on Sunshine, I'll be cheering it on this weekend.
