Except for the last two hours, which get "surreal" and are basically nonsense, it is a great film, and utterly compelling-- the kind of movie where you have no problem with an hour scene that consists solely of the protagonist talking in a bar. I showed it in college over a long weekend and had NO problem seeing all 15 hours in short order. If you can handle a season of The Sopranos or 24, you can handle this (not that it resembles either one, just pointing out things of similar length).
On the other hand, I've always resisted signing up for Heimat....
I have attended the Berlin gala screening of the first two restored episodes in digital projection. The quality is superb. While the first two episodes (with English subtitles) do not really allow a true insight into the film, one could not fail to wonder if any comissioning editor or tv producer somewhere on earth would be able to greenlight such a film today.
