It's not exactly surprising the studio smells money and they'd like a sequel, but if Scorsese or any quality director wants a part of a 2nd sequel, I'll eat a bug. A big fat juicy one.

Yeah, that smells fishy. First, I don't think Cuaron or Mann really feels the need to make The Departed II at this point. If the article had said Martin Campbell or John McTiernan, I would have bit a little quicker.
Second, Scorsese has made a sequel before - just not to one of his own films. The Color of Money, anyone?
However, I'll be in the opening weekend crowd if any director of note is brought aboard.
I think they post fake news just to get a response. They also posted that Mummy 3 was in trouble (mere days after casting news)... and then got a response from Universal, allowing them to post a second story:
I've never seen a site more desperate for hits/traffic than CinemaBlend. (Oh, wait... yes, I have...but Devin's my friend, so I have to be nice to him. )
A rumor as bad as this should automatically disqualify that toad Monahan from winning an Oscar for his screenplay. And Cuaron is absolutely perfect for such an obvious ploy. That would make two "amigos" who have sequels as their next movie!
I incline to the point of view that this particular scoop was found in the writer's ass, and I really doubt any A-list director wants to follow Scorsese, but if there were any truth to it, maybe the foreign director they ought to be thinking about for the sequel is Wai Keung Lau, not Alfonso Cuaron?
"next month they could do a 360 and decide to do something entirely different"
no writer is this bad, so i'm guessing that 360, instead of 180, was purposeful, lending credence to the whole story being BS.
But my question is as follows: why is remaking Infernal Affairs some kind of noble endeavor, but a remake of Infernal Affairs 2 is some kind of money-grubbing whore fest?
Mark, if they did a sequel with Mark Wahlberg's character, it wouldn't be a remake of IA 2 or 3, because Wahlberg's character was mostly a new one that didn't exist in the original HK movie. IA2 was a straight prequel to IA, so a remake of it would involve Jack Nicholson and Martin Sheen and it would shot the relationship hinted at in the scene where they meet in The Departed. That would be more than welcome, though I believe MOnaghan incorporated a few bit of that into Departed. IA3 kind of fills in the blanks both before and after the original movie and that stuff was definitely included in Departed. In the original Infernal Affairs, that first hour where Leo gets in with Nicholson's gang took place in five minutes in the original movie..and that's where Departed improved on the original movie since it was never really clear what was going on.
I understand EDouglas. But even if Monahan was using direction plot points from IA2, the cynics here would still be labeling it a money grab. But yet they didn't label a direct remake of the 1st one as such.
My point is that The Departed was no passion piece ala Children of Men. It remade a proven idea and was cast to bring home some effen bacon to all involved. And it turned out great. What's the problem with continuing in that setting?
P.s. and let no one forget about the Godfather. Tons of awards; highest grossing movie at the time i believe. Brando dead; Caan dead. And such a great ending, that i'm sure some considered it sacriledge to make a sequel.
Yet some smart people continued in that setting and made another pretty well-received flick.
Didn't anyone notice that original INFERNAL AFFAIRS has two sequels? I tried to watch No. 2 after loving the original and found it utterly unwatchable.

Everyone keeps saying that it would focus on Wahlberg's character. Is there any word on whether they'll bring back Alec Baldwin as well?

Or they could write in a subplot where David Bowie had cloned everyone in the first movie, and they all show up at the same place to settle the score.

That's actually what they did in A Better Tomorrow 2 to bring back Chow Yun Fat, who died in the first one.
