The Oscar Night upsets I'd most like to see happen (other than Alan Arkin beating Eddie Murphy) are...well, anything. I'll take any and all shockers. Except Letters From Iwo Jima taking Best Picture Oscar. I'd really, really rather not see that happen. But generally speaking, if no one except for obstinate love wolves like like Kris Tapley have predicted it and it happens, great. Peter O'Toole taking the Best Actor Oscar from Forest Whitaker ...fine. The Lives of Others triumphing over Pan's Labyrinth in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

So the element of surprise trumps worthiness? If you want upsets simply for the sake of upsets, then it kind of makes the whole thing a big game, which i suppose it is. But then why spend so much time thinking and writing about it? Is it worth it?

inarritu wins the best directing oscar. there is some precedent for upsets in this category; soderbergh and polanski both pulled off big ones this decade.
remember, the acting wing of the academy is by far the biggest bloc, and the departed getting only one acting nomination could be a sign of weakness.

I would love to see Jackie Earle Haley win - but not due to any Murphy hate. It's just a damn good story.

Soderbergh winning best director wasn't really an upset considering that he was nominated twice in that category and no one else was a clear frontrunner in the category, although I do remember a lot of talk about Soderbergh splitting the vote with Erin Brockovich and Traffic.
