"Was it not just the other day that I mentioned the travesty of Prince of the City not being released on DVD? The double-disc treatment will get this masterpiece seen by many more than ever had a chance to catch it in theaters. I don't know of any other film of this quality not yet out in the format...and POTC really is the best antecedent of Zodiac, which I saw the other night.
"Zodiac is a film that, on the one hand, seems to burst a blood vessel of tension when it wants to do so (pretty amazing for a film that tells a story in which we already know the answers) --- but on the other hand, it's more laconic scenes have a kind of ethereal beauty to them --- there's a warm bath quality to most of the film --- perhaps that is due to how perfectly it captures an era in time. An era that most of us savor -- for the movies, the music, the bad clothes and gas guzzlers." -- a director friend, writing late this afternoon.

Halfway through the post, I was still wondering what Pirates Of The Carribeans had to do with Zodiac.

Wishing for DVDs to be released....
I wished for "Reds," "1900" and "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome" to be released, and they were.
Now, I not only wish, but I beg for Losey's "Boom." -- the ultimate camp classic of overacting.
And yes...to me POTC = Pirates. Had to think twice before I caught on.

I think we need a triple feature of Prince of the City, Pirates of the Caribbean and Passion of the Christ.

And I'm still waiting for Hulk Hogan's 1989 classic No Holds Barred to hit DVD. Talk about a travesty ...
Ok, I was an extra in it. But still, it's a classic.

I'd like "The African Queen", "The Comic" with Dick Van Dyke, "On Borrowed Time" with Lionel Barrymore, "Man of a Thousand Faces" with James Cagney... and a pony :-)

Borzage's "Man's Castle" isn't on DVD. Neither is McCarey's "Make Way for Tomorrow". Or Wenders' "Kings of the Road", Angelopoulos' "The Travelling Players", Sjostrom's "The Wind", Ophuls' "The Earrings of Madame de...", Ozu's "I Was Born, But..." or Gremillon's "The Lighthouse Keepers".
Your director friend needs to get out a bit more...

...and I'll trade the pony in for "Houdini" with Tony Curtis, or even "The Great Houdinis", a 70s TV-movie with Starsky (Paul Michael Glasser), Gloria Stivic (Sally struthers) and Maude (Ruth Gordon).

"Matinee"
Come on Universal! Get it back out there! I love that film but I'm not shelling out Amoeba's $80.00 asking price.
MANT! MANT! MANT!

I'd give anything to get AMOLAD on dvd...and Little Dorrit, the 1988 version with Alec Guiness.
Give me time, I'll think of a few more.

There's an excellent chance Sony will finally be putting STAIRWAY out before the end of the year. MAN'S CASTLE also looks promising.

There are still lots of screwball comedies not yet on DVD. The best of the missing are Mitch Leisen's Easy Living (script by P. Sturges), Leisen's Midnight (script by Wilder and Charles Brackett), and Richard Boleslawski's Theodora Goes Wild, with the best of Melvyn Douglas' many good performances.

PRINCE OF THE CITY is a fine film, but it doesn't hold a candle to LITTLE DARLINGS (1980), WHITE DOG (1982) or FIRST LOVE (1977). Warner Bros. may be stingy on the dvd front, but Paramount is even worse.
