I'm glad to hear about this. Religion is the biggest problem in the world today, and it's unreal that we can be living in the 21st century and people still have Dark Ages belief systems. Honestly, if you want to believe in that shit, give up your electricity and computers and cars and everything that came from the age of reason throwing off the shackles of religious idiocy. Morons.

I can't help but get enraged that we can't so stem cell research to save lives because of religion. That gay people can't get married because of religion. That Iraq is coming apart at the seams because of religion. That people flew planes into the Twin Towers because of religion. That Israel and its neighbors can never be at peace because of religion. This world is fucked because of people holding on to insane beliefs - and I have to respect them for it.

You have insane beliefs, Devin, and I don't have to respect you for them. You're a simplistic bigot, which I never respect. Ever.
Go out and abort some babies, asshole, since you love it so much.

But, I can't resist. It's always refreshing to find another person who doesn't realize that pro-choice doesn't mean pro-abortion. Gotta love indoctrination at work.

I love these hot button issues...as if most people know anything about stem cells, their benefits, or the limitations around their use beyond the headlines they scan. Hilarious. The internet has made us all armchair experts.
Anyone who blames "religion" for the world's ills has a fundamental misunderstanding of human nature. People have been preying on each other since the dawn of man. Christianity, for instance, does not preach genocide or hatred, but throughout history opportunists have hijacked the religion for its power...and that's what it always reverts to: power. While many atrocities have been perpetrated under the guise of religion...oh hell, what's the use...
Fred...that's a good way to put it...it IS possible to be pro-choice while not being pro-abortion. To someone like NYCB, I would say in regards to people's decisions regarding use of their bodies: let them lose their souls, what do you care?
man holds onto religion out of fear, religion has given man a sense of purpose. men in power exploit peoples beliefs for their own monetary gain. the extremist feel they are losing their power and ability to influence so they strike out in the name of their God, but its really fear, the fear of being insignificant..
Count me in as being "pro-abortion." Or at least pro-abortion rights. That is, I believe a pregnancy may be terminated before delivery, within constitutional limits, because a developing fetus, at least in the early stages, is not what the law should recognize as a life.
While I consider myself something of a feminist, I have always held that the emphasis on women's "choice" has been counterproductive and fairly ludicrous. The main problem with the pro-choice argument is that it has been completely hijacked to mean that the right to choose what to do with one's own body is more important than protecting the life of another. If so, by that logic it could be argued that suicide bombers are merely choosing what to do with their own bodies as well.
So having control over your own body clearly does not by itself outweigh the opposition's argument that abortion is murder. Therefore, you first have to determine that termination of a pregnancy is not a homicide, and my firm belief is that, within limits, it is not. Once you commit legally to the notion that an abortion is not a murder, then constitutional privacy rights subject to strict scrutiny suffice to permit it - just as they guarantee the right to get tattoos, pierce body parts, and chew on one's own fingernails without government interference - and gender-based arguments become pretty irrelevant.
I'm the rare conservative that shuns organized religion (thus setting myself apart from the current crop of so-called Republicans.) And while I will probably agree with a lot of what is said in the film, I can only believe (with Maher's involvement) that it will be a smug, self-righteous, let's-look-down-our-noses-at-the-stupid-religious-people snoozer.
No thanks.

"It's always refreshing to find another person who doesn't realize that pro-choice doesn't mean pro-abortion. Gotta love indoctrination at work."
Gotta love the "pro-choice" fig leaf too.
Sure it means pro-abortion: being for the legalized existence of abortion. That's what I am. Do I love the label? No. Does its caveman-like simplicity convey every nuance of my beliefs on the issue? Not even close. But it's a hell of a lot more specific than this namby-pamby "pro-choice" cop-out.
Yes, I do realize there's a big difference between allowing somebody to be able to choose to do something that you wouldn't particularly do and waving pom-poms for what they'd do. And I also understand that anti-abortion activists have piled all kinds of Nazi-like evils on the shoulders of the "pro-abortion" label. To which I think, "tough shit for me".
The basic conflict on this issue isn't over nuances, it's about legal versus criminal. And at that level, being pro-choice honestly makes me pro-abortion and the other guy anti-abortion (but not automatically "pro-life" either).
i respect maher's show, especially after he was the first public media victim of bushco propaganda, but boy, his smugness sends me to the lord for salvation. and he's one of these rationalists common to the left who can't conceive of a world outside their eyes.
As I was munching my Abortion Flakes for breakfast this morning, I wondered to myself "Aren't we about due for another noxious, combative and thoroughly un-illuminating NYCBB post?"
Bingo.

I like Maher, but his film career's been rather disappointing, wouldn't you say? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094834/

I'd imagine it'd probably wind up disappearing like "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World".

A mix of Borat and Fahrenheit 9/11? The only thing we know for sure is it'll be nominated for a WGA award.
