Guilty pleasure voting

"[Oscar voters] tell the pollster, you or whomever, that they are voting for the serious gravitas-filled downer, Babel. But, mark my words, they are secretly voting for the pic that is their guilty pleasure, either Sunshine or Departed.'" -- posted by a N.Y. Times reader named Judy in response to a "Bagger" piece. Something about the conciseness and sense of certainty in this remark has given me pause. I'm suddenly thinking I might be wrong in predicting Babel to win. I need to think this over.

I don't have strong feelings for or against the nominees for BP but I've felt like The Departed had the edge since the nominations came out. I'll go with my gut and call it for Marty. Too bad this film and not Raging Bull.

Why would somebody lie about the movie they're voting for? Isn't that like lying about what you had for breakfast?

The only thing that would make me raise an eyebrow when Best Picture is announced would be if it went to The Queen. I used to be an Oscar tragic, but this year I'm not even going to have my traditional media blackout before the show (I live in Australia so we get a delay of several hours). It'll be checking the results on the net for me this year, because the acting categories are so predictable I don't care, and because Best Picture is so unpredictable that it won't really mean much who wins. It's a flip-of-the-(five-sided)-coin job this year.

I haven't seen Letters yet, but I wouldn't be at all upset if any of the other four films won. I thought they were all great. Unfortunately, I don't much care either.

I've heard nothing about Little Miss Sunshine since its SAG win and didn't expect to hear anything. It's a pretender. Just like The Queen and just like Letters from Iwo Jima. This is down to the only 2 films that have Editing nominations. Yes, it will be 26 straight years after this year that the Best Picture winner had an Editing nomination. I won't be shocked if Babel wins, which would mirror Crash last year. But I'm betting The Departed takes home Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay. Babel will get Editing and Score. Little Miss Sunshine will get the consolation Original Screenplay prize. The Queen will get Actress and Letters will possibly take home the Sound Editing award.

To put it concisely, fuck Babel. If that psuedo-profound piece of shit wins Best Picture, after Crash's abomidable win last year, the Academy can go to hell. Babel is nothing more than a self-serving balm for pampered actors playing pampered Americans who expect the world to grovel at their feet. I'm surprised Inarritu didn't put "We Are The World" somewhere on the soundtrack. And I am beyond sick of the useless blog about Dreamgirls. Who really gives a shit about Dreamgirls? It's already gone and forgotten. It's time for the bloggers to start annointing Charlie Wilson's War, Reservation Road, The Kite Runner, etc etc etc ad nauseum the movie to beat for the Oscar next year. Poland, are you listening?

If Phil Collins isn't nominated I don't watch.
