Kid Notorious

I don't like the way Robert Evans reads his own material. Too pat, too affected, too dependent on that trademark purr. Evans is five times better when he's not selling his smoothness and just being himself -- a snappy, sometimes angry, occasionally confused guy with an tenacious streak. Nonetheless, this excerpt from his forthcoming Kid Notorious recalls encounters with Frank Sinatra, Jack Nicholson, John F. Kennedy, showgirls, "debutramps," near-death experiences, his 1998 stroke, Sumner Redstone, et. al.

Aside from covering that abomination of a flash cartoon he had on Cartoon Network for a week or so, what in the world does Robert Evans have left to talk about that he hasn't already spilled?

The Kid Stays In The Picture seemed pretty all-encompassing to me. Pair that one with Joe Esterhaz' Hollywood Animal and you've pretty much spent all the time around those ridiculous people as you could possibly ever want.

He looks like a leather car interior turned inside out.

The Kids stays in the picture was an amazing audio book listen.

Unfettered arrogance. That purr is great. I first heard about it at a Patton Oswalt show in which he mimicked excerpts. Amazing.

It's like Chuck Barris ranting about being a CIA agent. Who cares if he's telling the truth. He's telling a good story.

And the show was on Comedy Central, not Cartoon Network, FYI.

One of my many favorite moments in "The Kid . . ." comes when Evans says proudly that Popeye was the fifth highest grossing movie based on a cartoon. His ability to find achievement amidst failure is hilarious.

He's aided by the fact that Popeye is a good movie loved by millions.

Ah, now that Robert Altman is dead all of his films have become instant beloved classics, I see.

I don't care what anyone says, nor how many wives he's had, on the basis of what I have seen, heard and read about the effeminately affected Evans, I would wager anything he's a closeted gay man. NOT that there's anything wrong with that...especially when you've lived the kind of outrageous, high-wire life he has. Sorry, but I'm convinced.
