Wells to readers saying I should stop wiggling around and stick to my guns about predicting the Best Picture Oscar...fuck that. This is a crazy year, nothing is adding up, nobody knows anything and if the wind changes or I pick up a fresh scent or hint of some turn, I'm going to listen to that and re-calculate accordingly. Stating once again: my final, final call is for Little MIss Sunshine to win the Big Prize. And that's really and truly it. No more changing my mind unless some new, wild-ass revelation hits me this afternoon.

I finally got around to LMS last night, and while it isn't as bad as expected up to Arkin's death, it goes to pieces thereafter. I can't believe so few reviewers, commentators, and bloggers have not even mentioned all that pageant nonsense. I'm truly glad I waited for the DVD and could zip through these horrors. I would have run screaming from the theater. In other words, I don't get the affection/enthusiasm for this movie.

No matter what movie wins, you'll pretend you predicted it because, at one time or another, you've predicted just about every film in the race. And even if The Queen comes out of nowhere and wins, you'll say that a "wild-ass revelation" happened in the 11th hour and you weren't able to post it. But you knew about it!

If LMS wins, that means the chances are excellent for the Simpsons movie to win next year. Because LMS is essentially just a live-action Simpsons episode, albeit not as good.

Discoman- Hyperbolize much? Don't like the movie, fine. But don't resort to making ridiculous statements to "support" your dislike.

No, you fuck off, we already voted, and we have to win our respective pools -- it's the only thing that matters, people talk about it all year -- who won, how they sprained their ankel celebrating at the party doing the limbo, etc. You apologized this morning, fell asleep last night and changed your mind this morning, as did Anne (she switched to Lives from Pan), at least she blogged late last night while you slept.
Who's going to be doing the best live Oscar blogging? Sasha? Nikki? You? Nikki got her panties in a twist over Sarah's Anne Frank joke, I'll bet they're big white bloomers.

MattyC: Sorry, I'm with discoman on this one.
LMS is really pretty awful. Treacle and retreads. I don't think that's hyperbole, just an opinion.
Is it hyperbolic to say Pirates2 was absolutely one of the worst films of the year? Lots of people said that and I would agree with that pronouncement. Something can makes tons of money and/or get tons of honors and still cause you to retch.
As you might if you're troubled by a)how derivative LMS is, b) how it falls apart storywise (SPOILER) after arkin's demise, c) how trite and overdone that whole pageant sequence is and d) how much it resembles every friggin' dysfunctional big and little screen family from Married with Children to Simpsons and then you've got the little girl who is a dead ringer for the little girl in Welcome to the Dollhouse.
It's a prefab construct that adds up to less than any of its pieces.
And in a few hours the Acad folks might decree it BEST FILM OF THE YEAR.
Yes, the world is that friggin absurd. The first four letters of hyperbole are HYPE, and that's what this whole day is based upon.
LMS is about the 39th best film of the year. It did, however, accomplish the impossible: it caused me to root for BABBBBBLE!!!!

I don't think I made a ridiculous statement, MattyC. I think LMC's one-dimensional characterization, non-sensical plot twists, and trite messages render it a pale imitation of a Simpsons episode.
Love your family depsite how odd they are? Done by the Simpsons for a couple of decades now. Self-help gurus are schlock, and child beauty pageants are creepy? Simpsons episodes.
BTW, I liked the movie. It was entertaining. But that doesn't mean I can't recognize and criticize it's flaws, and note that it in no way can be the Best Picture of 2006.

Even though I've predicted it will win, I hope LMS loses. If it wins the squalling will be unbearable.
Then again I thing there's going to be more complaining than usual this year whatever wins.

Sarah Silverman did a pageant episode last week with a new character, her estranged daughter -- it was brilliant. You'll need to catch up.

Sorry but poor Little Miss now has the stink of being the Spirit Award winner for best pic. Never, in all of their history, has their best pic winner ever gone on to win Oscar - Brokeback, Sideways, Crouching Tiger all won the Spirit only to lose at the Oscars. Is LMS really good enough to overcome the curse? Hm.
