Oscar nominees

All together now -- the whole
Oscar nominee community at the same instant in the same cosmic space, taken before or after
Monday's Oscar nominee luncheon.
USA Today reporter Claudia Puig says "the biggest cheers were heard for director Martin Scorsese, Will Smith, Forest Whitaker, Abigail Breslin, Helen Mirren and Peter O'Toole, who got a standing ovation."

O'Toole sprawling in front between Penelope Cruz and some lady in a pantsuit is great.

I found most of the usual suspects, but couldn't see Cuaron (though su dos amigos were in attendance) 4 of the 10 female acting nominees appear to be missing: Winslet, Streep, Dench, & Blanchett (all vets--ho hum!). Peter, Paul, & Penelope are front & center, but I feel bad for the woman stuck behind the very tall Hounsou.

Lubezki looks cool. Murphy looks lost.

I'm gonna guess that the 'lady in a pantsuit' is Sherry Lansing.
Love the beaming Jackie Earle Haley up top in the center.

Heh heh. I picked out the smuggest, prickiest looking character I could find in the picture, then looked up Haggis on IMDB. A match. You were right Josh.

Exactly, Haggis has a perma-smirk that you just want to throw tomatoes at.

Haggis probably sat in that chair two hours before the rest of the crowd assembled, just so he could be front and center.

He was out there with a measuring tape to determine the precise center. Later on he had to wrestle Penelope Cruz to the ground after he stood up to stretch and she swiped his seat. Then he put a little sign on the back of the seat "Paul's chair: don't touch".

Why all the Haggis hating?
The guy won an Oscar last year for his FIRST film, and this year contributed to two of the best, LETTERS AND CASINO.
Oh yeah, it's called....Jealousy.

That's the dumbest thing I've read all day, and that includes the political garbage on the other threads.
Paul Haggis is a hack and Letters and Casino Royale were good in spite of, not because of, him.

I don't know the man. Could be a lovely fellow. But I hated Crash and Flags of Our Fathers and I blame Haggis for the weakest moments of Letter's From Iwo Jima which may or may not be fair.
Based on the heavy handed pretention that so annoys me in his screenplays, I simply like to assume he's a wanker. It brings a smile to my face. Call it a flaw of mine.
I don't like Akiva Goldsman either.
The bitterness of a failed writer? Perhaps. Only my shrink would know for sure (if I had one).

That's a pointless argument to try to make. I'll post my credits if you post yours.
I suppose I can't claim that Rob Cohen is a hack, either, until I can command a $50 million dollar budget.
I guarantee that Haggis is responsible for the worst scene in Letters from Iwo Jima - the one with the dog. It screams his brand of clumsy manipulation.

Yeah, the dog and the crying children was one of the moments. If I remember correctly there was an unsubtle, blood splashed photograph during an especially intense scene that didn't need it (which might not have been the screenplay's fault) plus some unnecessary and overly obvious "gee these Americans aren't the monsters I thought they'd be" speechifying.
Oh and the ham-handed dinner party flashback when Watanabe was in America.
Having said that, I mainly liked Letters From Iwo Jima.

Take a stroll downtown and keep an eye out for street vendors that sell Replica Watches. Some storefronts sell these products and many ambitious salespeople sell these watches from briefcases, small street stands and car trunks. Canal Street in New York City provides a large array fake breitling watches and other interesting items for sale.
