The First Ones

The First Ones, a black-and-white N.Y. Times short film, directed by Jake Paltrow. It's basically seven big-name actors -- Brad Pitt, Helen Mirren, Leonardo DiCaprio, Penelope Cruz, Cate Blanchett, Abbie Cornish, Ken Watanabe -- talking about the films that made early vivid impressions. Not bad.

I haven't seen this docu yet but if Pitt doesn't say that his movie is "The Legend of Boggy Creek" he's lying.

You say seven big-name actors but I think you should leave that abbie chick out. I only know her as the girl who may have possibly broken up Ryan and Reese's marriage.

Who is Abbie Cornish, and why is she in this group? Is she, perhaps, Paltrow's girlfriend?? I saw these films yesterday, and the cutting and staging are arty and annoying, as though someone was afraid these subjects weren't interesting enough on their own.

Could Jake Paltrow be trying any harder to prove that he's a director and not just Gwyneth's Paltrow's brother? Black-and white, lens flairs, roll-outs, jump cuts, heavy-handed shots of fidgeting hands (that are straight out of an anti-drug PSA), etc. What is this, Madonna: Truth or Dare?
