"Zodiac" raves & databases

David Fincher's Zodiac (Paramount, 3.2) got two rave reviews today -- from Variety's Todd McCarthy and the Holly- wood Reporter's Michael Rechtshaffen -- and it opens a week from Friday, and yet the brainiacs at Metacritic don't even have it in their database.

"...with a reported $85 million budget, Zodiac is the first major Hollywood feature with this..." new, all digital, tapeless workflow. From now on, it's DPX files, DFR's, D.Mag's, X-SAN's, F-Dock's, LTO's, LUT's, MYSOL's, PIX's and BWF-XML's. If you want to get into filmmaking, go to computer school. What this, Dirty Harry was loosely based on Zodiac murders with a Hollywood ending, have to do with anything?

What me worry? How old Cary Grant? What you mean? What so wrong with happy dirty ending?

Somehow, I'd never heard about the DIRTY HARRY connection, although they make it clear in ZODIAC with a scene in which San Francisco cops screen the film. It will be interesting to see how audiences react to ZODIAC since it's a mystery that puts the viewer in the same frustrating position of the cops and reporters working on the extremely complicated case, which was full of dead-ends and red herrings. At the screening I attended, I could sense some viewers getting a bit perturbed when a clear villain didn't emerge by a certain point, although everyone stayed in their seats and they certainly reacted to the shocks and the jokes. Several of the scenes depicting the murders were as nerve-jangling as SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. And the soundtrack is superbly creepy: I've never been a big fan of Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" to begin with, but I definitely don't want to hear it again anytime soon after the way Fincher uses it in ZODIAC.

I believe MetaCritic adds films only after they open.

Does anyone else notice how the bridge railings peeking out of the fog in the banner ads for Zodiac resemble the outline of a woman's breasts? Maybe I've just got my mind in a weird place...

Metacritic adds film the week of their release. You'll see "Zodiac" probably added on Tues next week.

Seriously Jack, now that I'm naked and look down and see my headlights, your observation's correct and explains why the railings are a little crosseyed, none of which I would put past a guy who co-founded Pariah Films to make commercials.
