Classe tous risques (The Criterion Collection, 6.17.2008) Claude Sautet is best known for subtle interpretations of French bourgeois life in such films as Un coeur en hiver and Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud. Yet the director began his career with genre films. Classe Tous Risques, released in 1960, is considered the best of his early work and it's a fascinating companion to similar crime movies made around the same time by Jean-Pierre Melville. The official lineup for the 2007 Cannes Film Festival (5.16 through 5.27) won't be revealed until 4.19, but Cineuropa is reporting that "according to different sources," the event will open with Wong Kar Wai's My Blueberry Nights and close with David Fincher's Zodiac, with Francis Coppola's Youth Without Youth expected to join Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Thirteen as an out-of-competition title.

I ran a Peter Howell-inspired piece a few weeks ago that covered a lot of the same likelies and maybes. The only thing I missed earlier is the relatively fresh news that a longer version of Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof will be shown as a stand-alone feaure.

Potential Golden Palm contenders, in the view of Europa's editor[s], include Denys Arcand's Age of Innocence, Todd Haynes' I'm Not There, Joel and Ethan Coen's No Country for Old Men, Hou Hsiao Hsien's Ballon rouge, Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park and Emir Kustarica's Promise Me This.

Other distinct possibilities include Takeshi Kitano's Kantoku Banzai, Im Kwon-taek's Beyond The Years and Carlos Reygadas' Silent Light.

The Europa item says that "an air of uncertainty" hangs over Woody Allen's Cassandra's Dreams, Sean Penn's Into the Wild, Michael Moore's Sicko and Michael Winterbottom's A Mighty Heart. Hey, what about Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones documentary?

Where are you getting this idea that Scorsese is a festival guy, Jeff? His films rarely ever play at festivals. Also, I'd be really surprised if Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood doesn't compete, given a) the fact that he won best director at Cannes for Punch-Drunk Love and b) the success Paramount Vantage ultimately had with Babel after premiering it in competition at Cannes last year (of course, they already appear to have the Coen Brothers film in competition so who knows?). And don't rule out James Gray's We Own the Night. He's an incredibly underrated filmmaker and his last film (The Yards) screened in competition back in 2000.

Why, jeffmcm? He finished shooting his film last July. Todd Haynes was still shooting his in the fall. I also just found the following quote at the PT Anderson website:

"I've got an insider at Miramax that's tipped me off to THERE WILL BE BLOOD being released on OCTOBER 26TH. Post-production is still in the editing stages and is scheduled for completion on APRIL 27TH."

So it should be ready on time, right?
