edited by Jonathan Doyle
Mafioso (The Criterion Collection, 3.18.2008) Nino Badalamenti is a supervisor in a car manufacturing plant who hasn't taken a vacation in over two years. On his way out the door to visit his beloved childhood hometown of Sicily -- with his blonde wife and daughters -- Nino is handed a package by his boss and asked to deliver it to a powerful and influential Sicilian gangster named Don Vincenzo. Once in Sicily, Nino has a hoot seeing friends and family, but his wife has trouble fitting in and is unfairly dismissed as a snob by Nino's family. Even more worrisome, Nino finds himself entangled in an intricate web of secret mafioso dealings and is eventually sent on an unexpectedly... elaborate errand. (continued)

Paul Verhoeven speaks to Edward Douglas

"After Hollow Man, I felt that I should change gears, because I felt that it wasn't a personal movie anymore. I felt like I could not express myself in a personal way and said that I have to back off from the fantasy and the science fiction or the studios or whatever. I have to do something that's for me; I want to do something which I believe in again." -- Black Book director Paul Verhoeven speaking to Coming Soon's Edward Douglas.

Whoa, someone sure has aged alot in the last 10 years. Then again, Stone probably sucked 15 years out of his life for INSTINCT.

I‘ve always enjoyed the sheer vulgar vitality of his Hollywood work. The guy is a genuine auteur, his Hollywood product have always showed his distinct directorial fingerprints. The satire of American military culture and propaganda in Starship Troopers is very pertinent in today’s climate of Iraq and Fox News.

Plus I've always appreciated his way of directing smoking hot sex scenes. Everybody knows Basic Instinct but check out Jennifer Jason Leigh in Flesh and Blood. Her sex scenes in that obscure movie are smoking hot. Shame he didn’t direct Natalie Portman in Closer.
