Classe tous risques (The Criterion Collection, 6.17.2008) Claude Sautet is best known for subtle interpretations of French bourgeois life in such films as Un coeur en hiver and Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud. Yet the director began his career with genre films. Classe Tous Risques, released in 1960, is considered the best of his early work and it's a fascinating companion to similar crime movies made around the same time by Jean-Pierre Melville. "The price of a ticket at the emerging Tribeca Film Festival is increasing by 50% this year," reports Indiewire's Eugene Hernandez. "While most tickets for last year's festival were sold for $12, this year tickets for the majority of screenings are priced at $18" -- a higher per-ducat price than at any other major American film festival ." The TFF launched on the spirit of downtown recovery from 9.11.01, but now it has a new rep -- the nation's most avaricious and money-grubbing film festival.

"The price of seeing a movie at the Tribeca Film Festival is increasing dramatically in an area of New York City where the cost of daily life seems to be on a continual incline," Fernandez writes. "The cost is higher than all other festivals in major American urban cities but perhaps not totally surprising to those who face some costly cultural event prices in New York City where a ticket to MoMA infamously hit $20 and the price of a ticket to a Broadway show often exceeds $100."

It's not the surprise -- it's the arrogance. Not the $18 tickets in and of themselves (although $18 per ticket definitely sucks) as much as the 50% bump over last year's prices and the accompanying greed-head vibe overtaking the festival's founding spirit

Plus since last year the films play at venues not in Tribeca. The whole point of the festival when it was founded was to bring business back to the area downtown that was affected by the attacks on 9/11. Now that things there are "back to normal" (Tribeca has the highest real estate prices in the city) the festival has expanded -- maybe they need to change the name -- too bad "New York Film Festival" is already taken. {The latter WAS meant sarcastically)

The main reason I didn't go last year was cost. I didn't have finances to make it plausible to make the trip.

As an Volunteer I stared a dvd screening serise of old and new works that rolls out on the 13 and runs twice month until june in Cambridge Ontario. Having the support of the local arts council my admission price is $4 so everyone can take part.
