La Vie en Rose interviews
La Vie en Rose star
Marion Cotillard at last night's screening of
Olivier Dahan's impassioned biopic at the DGA building (where it was shown as part of the City of Light-City of Angels Film Festival). There was an onstage
q & a session after the screening with director Penelope Spheeris (l.) interviewing Dahan (center), Cotillard and producer
Alain Goldman (far right). Here's a
recording of a brief interview I did with Cotillard yesterday afternoon at the Four Seasons hotel, and here's a
recording of a portion of the q & a session at the DGA.

this must be one of the most...well.... 'interesting' little interviews i've ever heard....first of all, i was (back in the day) a huge harry nilsson fan but to hear someone equate him with garland and piaf is stunning in it's absurdity...then, to suggest that (because she was 9" shorter than piaf) larger sized actors had to be cast in order to keep things to scale was laughable but the biggest surprise was that you could even ask questions with your lips planted so firmly on her ass.....wow...please upload more unedited 1-on-1's.....i'm burning this one to discs and handing them out at friday's junket as party favors...most enjoyable....

Her performance really is ASTONISHING in this movie. Totally transformative. She not only looks like an entirely different person (I would have never dreamt of casting her in this role), she captures all of Piaf's mannerisms and vocal quirks, etc. But beyond the imitation factor, she also makes the character profoundly sympathetic and engaging - not that easy considering some of her actions.
The script is a little by-the-numbers, but a number of sequences are spectacularly conceived. The director did a very nice job.

I'm down with the Bettie Page look and this interview. You're a dork scooterzz, dispenser of party favors, door ticket taker and judge, jury and executioner. So glad Wells asked her about the third act of Piaf's life and how her physicality and surroundings were altered. In the department of getting the actor to open up and letting them speak comfortably, whether they are American or French or anything, he did good. Of course if you read this in the New York Times, there would only be pulled quotes in the story, so it's nice to hear, one on one, plus a little translator.

Marion Cotillard makes me feel funny inside.
I think they should let her play Nixon.
Oh and I retract anything negative I may have ever said about Wells' raw MP3 interview format. It's awkward at times, but there's something fresh and charming about hearing someone talking conversationally which you don't get when there's a TV camera shoved in their face or when the copy has been sanitized and shrinkwrapped by editors.

She does bring out my lesbian leaning yearnings, but Nixon belongs to Joaquin Phoenix, you tool.
