Mafioso (The Criterion Collection, 3.18.2008) Nino Badalamenti is a supervisor in a car manufacturing plant who hasn't taken a vacation in over two years. On his way out the door to visit his beloved childhood hometown of Sicily -- with his blonde wife and daughters -- Nino is handed a package by his boss and asked to deliver it to a powerful and influential Sicilian gangster named Don Vincenzo. Once in Sicily, Nino has a hoot seeing friends and family, but his wife has trouble fitting in and is unfairly dismissed as a snob by Nino's family. Even more worrisome, Nino finds himself entangled in an intricate web of secret mafioso dealings and is eventually sent on an unexpectedly... elaborate errand. (continued)

Love after the first year

"I think we have a really hard time culturally with what happens to love after the first year," says Away From Her director Sarah Polley in N.Y. Times piece by Katrina Onstad. "It is difficult, and it is painful, and it is a letdown. [But] that first year is so much less profound than what happens when you're actually left with each other and yourself in an honest way. It was interesting to me to make a film about what love looked like after life had gotten in the way, and what remained."

I hope people don't find the subject matter so off-putting that they avoid seeing this movie. It really is extraordinarily moving.

As great as it is to see Sarah Polley bloom into a promising director, it's a little sad to see her running away from her destiny as the great leading lady of her generation.

Away From Her was my favourite film that I saw last year...and I'm not sure if I'll see something better than it this year either.

Glad to hear some positive news about this one. I was moved by the trailer and, as a die hard cynic, that never happens.

I didn't even recognize Julie Christie at first, but I'm jazzed she's in another movie.

I also hope Polley doesn't stay behind the camera exclusively.

Sarah Polley's performance in "Sweet Hereafter" pretty much destroyed me. I've been a fan ever since. So now she wants to direct and not act? Where's the sin in that? "The great leading lady of her generation"? Feathers McGraw wrote that. What's that MEAN? Compared to WHAT?

I figure this woman is completely sane. Somehow.

I'm still happy after more than a year. Maybe I need to write a book for the Britney and KFeds of the world.

She knocked me out in Sweet Hereafter as well Joshua and there's certainly no crime in her wanting to direct. If there was, 90% of Hollywood would be going to hell.

Fore purely selfish reasons however, I hope she finds time to direct as well as act.

Can I just mention that the NY Times and Canada's Globe and Mail both ran profiles of Polley (and Onstadt who did the Times article is a Toronto writer) and both described her as "fine-boned."

Is this something women say each other? Never heard it before, then read it twice in one day...
