This muddy-looking video clip is why Jerry Seinfeld should host next year's Oscar awards, Key passage: Award shows are "all a big jerkoff," he says. "They don't mean a goddam thing. Stupid... they're all stupid. On TV, it's beyond me why we feel the need to...dig out these jagoff bowling trophies six times a year so all these people can pat each other on the back about how much money they're making [and] boring the piss out of half the world. And I had not already won [a lot of ] these awards, I would not be talking like this."

you should permanently embed that clip above your oscar balloon so it will be completely deflated by next year.

This is basically my favorite speech ever. I haven't deleted it off of my Tivo.

One of my "guilty" pleasures is 'Seinfeld' (seasons 1-7; the Jerry-produced 8 and 9 are an abomination)...the show was smart, real, with lots and lots of esoteric references, i.e. Kramer blurting out "Who is Joseph Cotton!!"...it was both popular and worthy of its perch...what's interesting is that it wasn't until years later that we learned it was David who was the genius behind it all...
...beginning with 'Comedian,' we started to see a different side of Seinfeld. I think Jerry is coming into his own...edgier, mroe irreverant. I know, it sounds silly to say that about a guy who has made literally $500 million telling jokes, but his oscar gig was genius and this latest clip carries even more authority...
...although Rock and Shandling sit there like they're watching Imus stick his leg out to trip little black children...

i always thought SEINFELD was the most overrated show of the 90's next to the bland awful FRIENDS.
SEINFELD would have been funnier if they had booted that laugh track which is so loud and obnoxious it almost seems intentional.

"Seinfeld" was brilliant. The reason they keep having these "jagoff" awards shows is that they are cheap to put on the air and they make $$$. As with Don Imus, as long as you make TV $$$ you will stay on the air (until your very presence threatens that flow of $$$). "Network" lays it all out for everyone to see.

Didn't Wells bitch about Seinfeld after this year's affair? Is he joking?

I'll back Jeffrey up – he complimented Seinfeld for the routine at the Oscars. (You must be thinking of someone else who bitched.) Wells was right, and I totally agree about this HBO speech – he pulls off something magical, being totally irreverent and snarky and acerbic, while still making the crowd feel good and looking genuinely appreciative. It's like a ribbon around a bomb. I agree, Jerry would be an awesome Oscar host.
Which is why the Academy will never let it happen.

why would the academy and nominees want to hear themselves ripped on all night?

Delbomber. I agree, I like seeing a crankier, edgier, more irreverent side of Seinfeld.
There was a lot of grousing about his Oscar routine, but I don't think any of it came from Wells. People are still crying about what Chris Rock said about Jude Law so I doubt we'll be seeing Seinfeld any time soon.
I think he'd be great though.
