since qt added about seven more hours of the bland melrose grrls talking about sex and VANISHING POINT, jeff's probably halfway through it at this point.

The only thing I didn't like about Death Proof was the endlessly blabbering on of the girls. That, and having to watch Eli Roth smirk his way through his performance.

Loved the finale though....Gotta say, I thought Zoe Bell was HOT...

I loved Death Proof and all the chatter. But Eli Roth is a pretty annoying actor - I assume he was cast in that part because his character is a pretty horrible person as well.

Interesting comment from http://trent.blogspot.com/2007/05/write-stuff.html"]"Pink is the new blog" via Dark Horizons and Eric Idle regarding Shrek 3's Monty Python scenes, but which could easily apply to QT:

MIX FM: "Don't you think they did that to pay homage to you?" Eric: "Do you think if I stole your wallet that'd be homage to your money? -- you see they neglected to tell us -- so the first I saw it was in the premiere -- and I was SHOCKED -- my whole family went WHAT! How dare you! So I walked out -- calmed down -- and walked back in -- but I was shocked and I think if you steal peoples jokes, I don't think that's homage, I think that's theft.

So the only thing you didn't like was 2/3 of the movie? Same here.

A 30 minute Death Proof, with no scene not involving Kurt Russell, would be my preference.

DZ, you obviously don't understand either the meaning of 'homage' or a significant bulk of how literature or art work.

I haven't seen Shrek 3, but if the extent of the movie's 'theft' is copying the coconuts joke from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, then yes, Eric Idle doesn't understand the meaning of homage. You can't copyright a joke. Dreamworks should have had the good business sense to clear the joke with the Pythons, but they probably aren't legally liable for anything.

Thanks for wasting my time, DZ.

on that we agree. it's hard to believe any of his scenes would be cut in favor of more jungle julia or eli roth.

i'm curious as to the foreign reaction to the film shorn of its GRINDHOUSE bookend. i could imagine those wacky french claiming its qt's best film...but hey, kurt russell in cannes!

You can copyright a scene from a movie which uses the joke.

DZ, there is a difference between borrowing technique and imagery and stealing a joke. Also, even with the step-back that much of Death Proof represents, Tarantino has become a better and more assured director than Godard. There, I said it.

This constant "theft theft theft" harangue has got to stop. Tarantino has been very upfront about City on Fire being an inspiration for Resevoir Dogs. And yeah, he probably got the names from The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3. If Mr.Orange and all of them were hijacking a train, you might have a point. You truly seem to have no grasp or appreciation for popular culture and media. It's become a tired refrain on this site in recent days, but why the hell do you insist on posting here? You are the Zack Mayo of Hollywood Elsewhere. You've got no place else to go.

Yes, dumbed-down violence for teen girls certainly demonstrates strength.

"Tarantino has been very upfront about City on Fire being an inspiration for Resevoir Dogs."

No he hasn't, or I wouldn't be complaining about it. People claim that he has, but they can't find any quote verifying that claim.

I've seen City on Fire, and I don't think Reservoir Dogs is stolen from it. It's inspired by it, sort of the way Scorsese's The Age of Innocence is inspired by The Magnificent Ambersons.

Oh, god, here we go again.

DZ, NOBODY cares about your stupid Youtube video. It is utterly meaningless. As I said before, Ringo Lam has never said that he gives a shit if Tarantino stole anything from him, and Tarantino has never _not_ said that he didn't borrow from City on Fire. This is a huge non-issue that you use to distract from some mysterious other reason that you have for not liking him or his films that you've never copped to.

I'm gonna have to go back to calling you a liar again because that's what you are.

christian: "yes, i've always loved the original "i don't tip" speech from CITY ON FIRE."

That probably belonged to Roger.

"and that fake flashback monologue was better in COF"

Wasn't that from Pelham?

"with a much more powerful 70's soundtrack..."

What soundtrack? It's the same song played twice! If some college kid did that, it'd be considered amateurish. Plus QT's an ass for swiping that Madsen dance scene from I, Vitelloni.

jeff: "Ringo Lam has never said that he gives a shit if Tarantino stole anything from him,"

Probably because he no longer owns his own film, since QT bought it out from under him.

"and Tarantino has never _not_ said that he didn't borrow from City on Fire."

He just has never said that he did, either.
