HE to Ethan Coen (at today's press luncheon): "The only speed bump for mainstream audiences in No Country for Old Men, as you know, is your decision to not allow audiences to share in Josh Brolin's final fate, as it were."
Coen to HE: "And that's a perverse decision, isn't it?"
HE: "Well, that's one of the things that give the film artistic authority and distinction, and it either makes people respect it or..."
Cohen: "Or dislike it."

HE: "Well, we all know that there's a certain expectation [out there], that when you've spent the entire movie with a guy, you wanna...but for me, this is what makes the film extra-special."
Coen: "And for us too. I mean, it's just from the novel and [garbled]. But when you get to this point you say, 'Okay, the movie's not ultimately about this guy...so what is it about?'"
HE: "About the end of the world, about the good old stuff really coming to an end, about being engulfed by waste and annihilation."
Coen: "Uh-huh!"

Yeah, uh, I normally don't like to be one of those spoiler nazis, but what you just did is pretty assinine Jeff. You gave away details to a film's ending that isn't going to be released for another 6 months without any warning. Kind of an asshole move. You should have put in a spoiler warning and saved the details until after the jump.

Well, that's the thing, the book is already out there, so you could've "ruined" it for yourself at any time. Regardless, I agree that Jeff should've put a spoiler warning up, but I'm still as excited as ever to see the movie and I don't really think the movie is going to be about the fates of each of the characters.
Although, I think it's hilarious and typical Jeff that when Coen asks what the movie's about, his first reaction is "the end of the world". Haha, always thinking it's the end of the world, classic Jeff.

It's all too vague to be considered a "spoiler."
Take it for what it is. We know that Brolin is one of the main characters of the story (any future trailers will tell you this, so I can't consider it precious information), and whatever his "fate" is (again, not specified whether it turns in his favor or not), the audience isn't necessarily going to like how it's presented to them. Perhaps it's too cold, distant, etc.
I'm also on edge about having any info carelessly leaked to me. But seriously, this was a close call but not a direct hit.

The first thing I did when I heard Jeff was going to see No Country for Old Men at Cannes was to go straight to the library and read it as fast as I could. Seriously, if you've read Wells for any length of time at all, you know bombshell spoilers are his stock and trade. He wants the "transcendent" experience of watching a quality film to be his and his alone.
I still haven't forgiven him for blowing the best joke in Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back. That's how petty he is about this kind of thing.

Why are people defending Wells here because he didn't explicitly say what happens? He's already alluded to the kind of character Brolin is and how it's unsatisfying that we don't get to witness his "fate"... I don't think that's referring to him getting the girl or winning the lottery.

Let me preface this by saying I haven't seen the film or read McCarthy's novel. While the ethics of Jeff's spoiler are a separate argument, those of you claiming that he didn't specifically ruin anything are delusional. When someone mentions the "fate" of a certain character, you know very well that guy is biting the dust. The same thing happened over on Poland's blog where some asshole mentioned "the fate" of DiCaprio's character in The Departed. Now I was still blown away (no pun intended) when I saw the film, but I was expecting the outcome with regard to Costigan.
I imagine the same will be true here, and that the film won't necessarily be ruined for anyone, as the Coens are talented enough to not let the quality of their film rest on the surprise of a single character's destination. It appears that Brolin is playing the Buscemi role in this one, and Jeff has likely lost some credibility for dropping that not-so-subtle hint.
While I'm glad that the Coens are getting thoughtful again after a couple of lightweights (I found Intolerable Cruelty disposable but very entertaining, while The Ladykillers was disposable and unfunny), I'm a bit dismayed that they felt the need to dispose of what is for all practical purposes their stock company. No Goodman, McDormand, Buscemi, Turturro, Shalhoub, and I guess Clooney. Surely at least one of these people would have fit the material. Maybe they were worried no one would take the film seriously enough with any of these familiar faces, but they've been able to ride that serio-comic line very well in the past. For the record, Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn't There, and Hudsucker are my favs.
And off topic here for a sec, wasn't Jeff supposed to see the U2 3D film this weekend? I was eagerly awaiting the bitter old critic's reaction to the loud concert film.

McDormand is too young to play Jones's wife and too old to play Brolin's (based on the way the movie presents them). (And Jones's wife, as a part, would be roughly the same size as the part she played in 'Miller's Crossing'.)
"Surely at least one of these people would have fit the material."
This film marks Stephen Root's third Coen brothers movie. And your list ignored the only Coen brothers semi-regular who I would think could possibly fit in the movie, Jon Polito. But I'm glad he's not in it. There'd be no room for any of the others.

I have to disagree with you--Tommy Lee Jones is all ego, on and off screen. I think he's inappropriately cast here specifically because Bell is decidedly lacking in ego--particularly towards the end when he's telling his war story to his uncle. I just can't see TLJ pulling that scene off.
