Caro dissing Farrelly Bros. "Kid"
Pop Machine's Mark Caro rips into the Farrelly Brothers' The Heartbreak Kid (Dreamamount, 10.5.07) with Ben Stiller in the Charles Grodin role.
Going by the trailer, Caro suspects the feature may be a cowardly, slapstick-shallow, hopelessly dumbed-down non-echo of Elaine May's original The Heartbreak Kid (1972), which was funny but at the same time traumatic, angst-y and occasionally cruel. My favorite scene was the abrasive after-dinner confrontation between Grodin and Eddie Albert (i.e., playing Cybil Shepherd's dad), in which Albert tried to buy Grodin off.
Caro understands, of course, that every remake of a film made in the '60s, '70s or '80s has to be cruder and dumber than the original. He realizes that today's under-35 moviegoer need things to be broader, louder, blunter, etc. "Hit me with it!...no, pour it over my head!" works much better than "nudge me in the ribs" or "whisper it in my ear." Nonetheless, Caro is pissed.

Casino Royale? A programmer based on a silly 60s romp based on a pulp thriller.

Seriously, folks, have you actually seen this thing? An apocalyptically bad trailer - not one weak laugh from a 3/4 full house for Oceans 13. The place, like Bruce and Harriet Nyborg, imperceptibly slumped.
We all know that trailer houses turn these things out like melamine-tainted sausages, but if half that jive has pride of place in the release, then, fuck, yes, I'll be pissed. You don't have to be either a codger or a crank to get pissed at something you're fond of being kind of debased that way.

He is being cranky by placing the blame on "under 35 moviegoers" as if they are the only people who are at fault for films like these being successful. He believes that him and his generation are the only ones that truly know about quality and it's simply not true. Maybe he knows a lot of dumb younger people. I agree that the majority of today's comedies suck, but it's not solely the fault of the youth of today.

Speaking of awful trailers, every time I go to a wide release at a certain AMC in Burbank (one of my least favorite places to enjoy a movie but I'm constantly drawn back by the free parking, $6 pre-noon prices and layout conveniently designed for sneaking in to multiple features, I know I'm a cheap dirty movie whore) I see trailers for Chuck and Larry and License to Wed and the audiences LOVE them. I'm sitting there gagging on my popcorn and I'm surrounded by lovers of awful comedies.
If the trailer is as bad as people keep saying, Heartbreak Kid will probably be huge.

Why remake "The Heartbreak Kid" if you're so squeamish about its story and themes? Why not call it something else, like "Along Came Polly 2"?
If I'm remembering correctly, when THE HEARTBREAK KID 2.0 was being developed at DreamWorks, Jason Bateman was originally considered for the Grodin role.

If cheap and easy are your primary criteria for picking a movie theater (and clearly they often are for me), then you can't miss with AMC Burbank.
I would also add that a kick in the balls is better than seeing a movie at Beverly Center.

i did go see GRINDHOUSE at the beverly center a few weeks back on a saturday on a smal screen with a packed house. it was perfect. that movie instills a sense of community in the audience everytime i've seen it. especially in the bevrely center.
