New Baddies of 2007

Six years and three months ago -- on 3.21.01 -- I considered a spate of dreadful early 21st Century youth-market pics like American Pie (has anyone re-watched this thing lately?), Saving Silverman, Head Over Heels, Say It Isn't So, Tomcats, Josie and the Pussycats and American Pie 2. I then considered the young actors who'd starred in these films, and decided that they'd basically become (or were fated to be) shit magnets. As it turned out, I was mostly (or at least half) right.

My personal must-to-avoids in that pre-9.11 time pocket were Jason Biggs, Freddie Prinze Jr., Chris Klein, Amy Smart, Seann William Scott, Monica Potter, Tom Green, Mena Suvari, Jack Black and Amanda Peet.

Which of these actors has a reasonably vibrant, still-happening career today? One -- Jack Black. The others are either marginal, sputtering or fizzled. Why? I think it's at least partly because these actors made so many shallow/dreary/shitty movies, and people just got tired of submitting. Another reason is that anyone enjoying any kind of career flare-up these days is doomed to succumb to the 15-minute cycle because of the increasing velocity and volume of everything.

Question: which young actors today are cruising for a similar bruising? You see their names on the poster, and right away a voice tells you (however fairly or unfairly, accurately or inaccurately) it's either so-so or mediocre or an outright stinker. Because of one factor and one factor alone -- they're in it.

90% of that list is shit, but I take exception with AMERICAN PIE and SAVING SILVERMAN. AMERICAN PIE was, for better or worse, a resonant late century film that really captured a place in the public consciousness. More than anyone else it was a breakthrough for Eugene Levy (which he has since squandered.)

SAVING SILVERMAN is objectively a bad film, but I've always had a soft-spot in my heart for it. It features good work from two of the great Indie supporting actors of that time, Zahn and Black, and one of Biggs' better lead roles other than ANYTHING ELSE. Plus I love Neil Diamond. I would put it in the category of a righteous failure with FREDDIE GOT FINGERED.

I'll answer your bruisin' cruisin' question and say Dane Cook and Jessica Alba- oh good, they're in a movie together! And obviously I try to stay away from anything with Andrew Dice Clay in it. THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE really broke my heart.

Seann William Scott still has a strong career, with a few high-profile releases due later this year. And Amanda Peet is an amazing talent, and though "Studio 60" was cancelled, will be on big screens later this year as well. I'm still irritated her note-perfect one-scene performance in Changing Lanes wasn't more widely noticed.

  • Topher Grace (you can see the gears turning)

  • Jason Schwartzman (he'll always have Rushmore but seriously, since then?)
  • Maggie Gyllenhaal (why on earth people keep defending this shrill, one-note "actress" is beyond me)
  • Tobey Maguire (now that Spidey is over, has anyone actually seen The Good German - this guy is DOA the second he walks onscreen)

Also, while his film career isn't on fire, I'd say that generally speaking Jason Biggs is respected for some of his Broadway work.

Topher Grace is impressive in low-key pleasant stuff like WIN A DATE WITH TAD HAMILTON and especially IN GOOD COMPANY. Plus I actually found myself missing his cameo in OCEAN'S THIRTEEN

"Shia Lebouf (the Coreys were once in demand, too)"
Can't really disagree here, though your statement raises the horrifying prospect of a second Shia.

"Jason Schwartzman (he'll always have Rushmore but seriously, since then?)" I HEART HUCKABEE'S, MARIE ANTOINETTE (I know I'm asking for trouble). Plus, he is close to and well liked by some of the great talents currently working.

"Maggie Gyllenhaal (why on earth people keep defending this shrill, one-note "actress" is beyond me" SECRETARY, HAPPY ENDINGS, SHERRYBABY. Hot as fuck.

"Tobey Maguire (now that Spidey is over, has anyone actually seen The Good German - this guy is DOA the second he walks onscreen)" If he has vocal talent, he might have Mark Hammil's career, otherwise he's fucked.

Not to sound totally shallow but like most red-blooded American males, I tend to give actresses a pass if they're easy on the eyes (for instance, I don't think anyone here believes Jessica Alba will ever make people forget about Katherine Hepburn but I'm not going to complain about watching her). But Maggie G?

Schwartzman is liked because he is the son of long-time Hollywood people. And being liked and being cast in something other than your friend's movies are two entirely different indicators of talent and appeal.

Woody Allen worked wonders with Scarlett in Match Point who I never found all that sexy up until that point. Really it's the role and the director that bring out the appeal in an actress. For example while Jessica Biel should be sexy as hell instead she looks like a piece of cardboard in Fantastic Four.

Every age produces bland, pretty young people who soon disappear because there's nothing memorable about them. You have to find something really strong about your persona and work it hard to escape that. Robert Redford could easily have been James Franciscus if he hadn't figured out how to turn limited ability into a movie-level stillness that seemed magnetic-- and if he hadn't gotten lucky as Newman's straight man. Watch Jimmy Stewart in a movie like Of Human Hearts (1938) to see a legend about two movies away from being over before he started.

Jamie Kennedy. Yes, agreed 100% - his goofy white rapper shtick got stale very quick, especially since Andy Samberg does it better.

Kal Penn had potential, but he's quickly blowing it. Doing that indie movie earlier this year was a smart move.

Ashton Kutcher was decent in The Butterfly Effect, but he's in danger of getting stale otherwise.

Anybody who appeared in Dawson's Creek is over, except for Michelle Williams.

Katie Holmes did Batman, married Tom Cruise, and took up Scientology -- over.

Michelle Williams did Brokeback Mountain, married Heath Ledger, and is currently making a Charlie Kaufman film with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Emily Watson, and Samantha Morton -- beginning of a brilliant career.

Van Der Beek is making a film with C. Thomas Howell -- it doesn't get any more over than that.

I've never seen Ashton Kutcher on film -- that patented dumb-guy look of his is enough to put me off for life.

Seeing Seth Rogen practicing his version of the dumb-guy look over and over put me off Knocked Up, but so many smart people claim he's got what it takes, I may have to grit my teeth and rent the DVD. But for his next few films, he's got to drop that dumb-guy look.

I don't know what this is a big thing. I mean, let's look at the Brat Pack from the 80s. Demi Moore probably became the biggest name out of them, but it took her a while. Emilio Estevez has had a solid career. But, Rob Lowe still gets work by making fun of himself ever since the sex tape scandal. Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy work infrequently. And where is Anthony Michael Hall and Andrew McCarthy nowadays?

To be honest, good roles for very young actors are hard to find. Often, you get stuck with dreck, either bad action films or forgettable sex comedies.

Hate to burst your bubble, but Shia Labeouf or what have you is about to become a huge star. I haven't seen any movies with him. I just know that Disturbia opened at number one, Transformers is going to make bank, and the way people who are not cineastes talk about him means the guy is going to be huge. Ashton Kutcher seems to have faded big time.

Seann William Scott i hear perpetually is a great guy with a decent attitude. That doesn't mean he's necessarily a good actor, but I'd rather root for him than some of those others on the list.

And poor Amy Smart. She deserves better, really does have some decent charisma. She needs a new agent and needs to stop showing up in tripe.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead - who I have met - I have high hopes for. She's another down to earth person with smarts and manners.

Jason Schwartzmann will always have a cult following and to me he has done interesting work. He was the only thing I could tolerate in Shopgirl when I wasn't getting creeped out by Steve Martin. And he helped Marie Antoinette if you ask me.

The rest of them, however, not so sad to see them go nor did I ever expect much from.

Ashton Kutcher and Ryan Reynolds appears to be from the same fratboy mold, but Reynolds does at least have a sense of non-assholish charisma about him. The two Jasons - Schwartzman and Biggs - are plenty enough to keep me away from a film. Mandy Moore saved herself from completely vaporizing with the clever one-two punch of SAVED and AMERICAN DREAMZ. That and apologizing for her terrible pop records.

Agree on Dane Cook. God. Nauseating.

But let's not crown Shia yet. I mentioned the Coreys because they were in a number of serviceable films and hits (Silver Bullet, Lucas, The Lost Boys, Stand By Me, The 'burbs) before flaming out. I just looked up fucking License to Drive and even that was a moderate hit ($22 mil, which would be about $40m in today's dollars - considering it probably cost 5 cents to make, pretty good).

Was Disturbia a hit because of Shia or because it was an solid tweener thriller sold effectively with good word of mouth? Transformers? Yes, huge, gigantic. But in both cases, the films would be hits with any other disposable fresh face in the lead.

How this kid suddenly got anointed as The Next Big Thing has more to do with Sir Steven's benediction than a hue and cry for more Shia LeBouf. You can't force talent or appeal.

In addition to STUDIO 60, Peet earned excellent reviews for her terrific work in the revival of BAREFOOT IN THE PARK last year on Broadway. Don't scoff: the role requires her to be onstage for all but one scene, and it's a very physical one as well.

Thora Birch remains busy, but she's mostly doing indie art films (including at least one she produced herself) that hsven't been picked up yet.

I'm also going to have to join in on the hate for AMERICAN PIE. It's early-twenties cast's talent level is debatable enough, but that fucking movie turned my affections for Eugene Levy into am absolute hatred of the guy's work. The hack check-cashing performace floodgate was opened by that piece of shit: THE MAN, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2, BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE, NEW YORK MINUTE, DUMB AND DUMBERER, DOWN TO EARTH, and of course AMERICAN PIE 2 - 5. His appearance in trailers now makes me cringe and he was the stake in the heart of A MIGHTY WIND for me.

"But, Rob Lowe still gets work by making fun of himself ever since the sex tape scandal."

He still gets work because he pulled himself together for a while on "The West Wing" with an excellent performance before he tantrumed himself off. You can see the tepid version of basically the same character on "Brothers and Sisters".

"Question: which young actors today are cruising for a similar bruising? You see their names on the poster, and right away a voice tells you (however fairly or unfairly, accurately or inaccurately) it's either so-so or mediocre or an outright stinker. Because of one factor and one factor alone -- they're in it."

It isn't really the young actors making those movies right now. My marquee shitlist has people like Matthew McConaughy, Kate Hudson, Robin Williams, Hillary Swank, and Ice Cube crowding the top.

I have to defend Matthew Lillard a little bit too. I hated him in "Scream", but he kicked ass in "SLC Punk" and its been sad to watch his career fizzle onward ever since.

I'm surprised no one added Claire Danes to the list.

Reading D.Z.'s post reminds me of the sight of a very small and skittish dog taking a dump on the side of a curb.

Eddie and whoever wrote back to him- Reynolds kicks ass in The Nines. I agree that I always used to think of him as Jason Lee-lite, and waiting is a horrible film, but Reynolds was pretty good in Smokin Aces, saved Blade Trinity from being completely terrible, and he rocks ass in The Nines. Such a good flick.

But I will also firmly put myself on the No More Dane Cook bandwagon. That guy's just terrible.

I used to have Paul Walker on the top of that list, I even had a theory about how Paul Walker has to be the nicest guy in the world to explain how he keeps getting parts (they gotta feel bad for the guy), but then he also rocked a little ass in Running Scared, so he's moved up on the list slightly.

Prager: there's more to being hot than just having a great body. With Alba, you get the feeling that the lights are on, but no one's home.

And if you think I'm gay, send over your wife or girl friend (if you have one)--I'm sure she'd appreciate the improvement.

Cadavra takes almost 24 hours to respond to a post. A new HE record, I think...

"With Alba, you get the feeling that the lights are on, but no one's home."

And this makes her not hot because...?

I'm assuming that Cadavra means that Alba's hot, but that her attractiveness would diminish as you got to know the "real" person.

Oh, I get it. Only smart broads get Cadavra.

here's an example.

example:

CADAVRA
"HATARI and VALANCE are bloated but LAWRENCE is not? I know it's The Greatest Movie Ever, Ever Made, Ever, but seriously, that second half could use some pruning."

JEANNE MOREAU
You are so right, Cad. I want to hear everything you have to say on this matter. Be a darling and pour me another glass of Pernod. Lawrence of Arabia does need some pruning. You have so many opinions on so many things. I find that very sexy...

or:

CADAVRA
"HATARI and VALANCE are bloated but LAWRENCE is not? I know it's The Greatest Movie Ever, Ever Made, Ever, but seriously, that second half could use some pruning."

JESSICA ALBA
Huh?

CADAVRA
Lawrence of Arabia...

JESSICA ALBA
Lawrence who?

CADAVRA
Lawrence of Arabia. It's a movie.

JESSICA ALBA
Oh....did you make those reservations yet?

CADAVRA
Reservations?

JESSICA ALBA
The sushi place?

CADAVRA
I forgot.

JESSICA ALBA
You forgot! Omigod....

Cadavra takes almost 24 hours to respond because Cadavra has a life and doesn't spend most of it online.

But credit where credit is due, Prager: the me/Alba exchange is very funny, especially as I have in fact had this conversation on several occasions, most memorably with a girl named Tiffany who not only had never heard of BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S but was completely unaware of the store itself.

I find Maggie G. neither intellectually nor sexually stimulating, and the two are very often intertwined. I'm not going to go into a diatribe about her plain-ness, but her arrogance and complete self-absorption with being a hip Village actress would turn me off no matter who she looked like...

I understand some guys like watching women in high heels squashing bugs...hey, to each his own, but please, PLEASE, don't try to convince the rest of us...
