A fairly interesting, nicely written interview with onetime soft-porn star Sylvia Kristel by the Telegraph's Mick Brown. Kristel spoke to Brown in order to publicize her tell-all book called "Undressing Emmanuelle" (which I couldn't find on Amazon).

I'm sorry to recall this but amongst friends of mine back in high school it was an inside joke to refer to someone ugly as an "unearthly beauty" since it was a line that referred to Kristel in one of the Emmanuelle films that played on HBO or Cinemax way back when (and since we all thought she was nothing close to a "beauty").

Do you people realize how huge, how massive EMMANUELLE was in the 1970s, especially in Europe. It was a bona fide franchise (leading to innumerable sequels) and Sylvia Kristel was a huge star.

Hell, that European poster of the original (with Kristel sitting on a straw chair) was classic and certainly one of the great posters of all time.

Jeff, knows she was a huge part of popular culture during the 70s (hell she even played an 'air hostess' in AIRPORT '79: THE CONCORDE)

Speaking of AIRPORT '79...You gotta give the casting director credit on that one, I mean Charo, David Warner, Cicely Tyson, Alain Delon, Jimmie Walker (from GOOD TIMES), Bibbi Andersson (yes from the Ingmar Bergman films), Mercedes Mcambridge, Robert Wagner, etc etc - I mean its so bizarelly fucked up its pure genius.

Movies these days don't have casts like that, unfortunately.

This is the same film where George Kennedy as a pilot tells Kristel "They don't call it a cockpit for nothing!"

Ahh, how I loved the 70s.

Can we asume this book is going to be al labout the Ian McShane years? The guy is an amazing f'n actor, but all those stories about him beating her to make her lose their baby, egging her on to do drugs while pregnant really make him look a cocksucker. Of course, you have to take these things with a grain of salt.

You're on to something, George. Just try to get someone to discuss the lack of sex and nudity in the films of a certain director who worships exploitation. This is a legitimate and interesting topic that I've never seen properly addressed, but apparently it's distasteful to even bring it up.

Richard Benjamin was a big leading man in the 1970's too - but how many women really wanted to fuck him? There were soooooo many better looking sex objects from that decade ahead of Sylvia Kristel.
