Ari and Lloyd
New York's "Vulture" columnist Ben Mathis-Lilley hit it right on the head in his assessment of the Ari-Lloyd thread in last night's Entourage episode. He calls it "a subplot that wavered with surprising skill between comedy and tragedy," and that it "points to the odd fact that the ostentatiously hetero Entourage writers do a much better job writing monologues for a hyperactive gay Asian than they do writing shit-talking bro-down exchanges between the four dudes.
"It also led to the scene in which Ari tracks down Lloyd's ex and reveals that Lloyd was actually at work the previous Friday, not philandering like the boyfriend thought. Typically clean Entourage wrap-up, it seemed, except it turned out that Ari was just covering -- Lloyd was cheating! It was an unexpected moment of depth involving a peripheral character, followed up by an even more unexpectedly heartfelt moment in which Lloyd explained that he strayed because he's so plagued by self-doubt that he didn't know what to do when someone he thought was out of his league showed an interest in him.
"Great stuff!," Mathis-Lilley concludes. "Should Entourage go all gay, all the time?" Uhm, well, no...but Lloyd is a first-rate character, and it's always pleasurable when a genuinely ironic turn occurs (i.e., an amusing but essentially deranged psycho agent brings a couple back together and brings happiness into their world for totally selfish reasons). Real-life stores are often made up of morally tangled situations, but TV and screenwriters rarely use them.

I typically can't stand Entourage because of its obnoxious dude-bro point-of-view, but I do check in with it now and again because I think the Ari-Lloyd relationship is a scream.
I'll have to catch this episode on On Demand, it sounds good.

Entourage is a seriously overrated show. Grenier is the most uninteresting actor (playing the most uninteresting character) at the center of a show, ever. Only the great Jeremy Piven is worth watching.
This was one of the rare episodes I've actually seen; I was waiting around for Flight of the Conchords (which IS hilarious). Frankly I find Lloyd to be TV's lastest cliche, the nelly Asian gay guy (Alec Mapa was unavailable for the role, I guess?).
I grew up in Queens, so I have a hard time finding the stupidity of Drama and Turtle actually, y'know, funny. Now if they made *Turtle* gay -- then I'd watch every week. Mr Ferrara is hot stuff.

Overrated these days. Piven's character is just becoming a big joke, which is unfortunate because there is potential for a show called ARI GOLD. I've never been a fan of Grenier or his character. Kevin Dillon is fucking great though.

This season is much better than last. The tone of the faux-making of Medillan was off, and last week's episode, The Dream Team, was a throwaway, but otherwise the show is more than fine.
The up and down nature is all about the writing, and nothing to do with Grenier, who for some reason has become a punching bag to cyber geek reviewers everywhere. I wouldn't even consider him one of the two main characters in the show.

Entourage is accessible entertainment for anyone with 2 eyes and 2 ears and a sense for satirical entertainment. it becomes something special for those of us working in Hollywood and who deal with Ari Gold's and Vinnie Chases' and Billy Walsh's on a daily basis.

This series was interesting for 5 minutes. Whatever momentum it might have had, it was lost somewhere during season 1. I do enjoy the Ari/Lloyd characters, but I have zero interest in the main foursome; they really need a friend who's not from back east, seriously. I understand the need for it to be over-the-top in every instance of presenting the Hollywood Life, but it's become tiresome. Then again if I were a teenager living in Tulsa, I'd probably be slurping this up every Sunday night.
I live in LA so it's easy for me to see beyond the glossy nonsense; at times the show does reflect the glam of the city and whatnot, but I'm here to say that not every person in every coffee shop in this town looks like a model. I know it's a TV show and they need to sell unblemished pop culture at all times, I get that -- but it's a show that has decided to forgo any desire to explore even slightly below the surface of the 'biz to remain what is the TV equivalent of flipping through US Weekly -- at a coffee shop populated only by models.

Derby, If you live in LA and you're not in the business you may as well be in Tulsa. It's two L.A.'s. Two America's and two L.A.'s. Ask John Edwards. Also, it is an HBO show. It's not PBS. It's not a documentary. It's just a fun comedy show.

I thought this episode was very good . . . Ever since the 1st season, it seems that the show only has a handful of episodes that I really like, and the rest I forget immediately.
I guess all of the ones I forgot stemmed from "not getting The Biz."

I think a lot of the charm this show had in the first two seasons is gone. However, it's still one of the better written shows around.
But there is one thing about it that has been bothering me since part 2 of season 3, what happened to the amazing music? Through most of the first 2 1/2 seasons of the show, the music always fit the mood so well. Elton John's Saturday Night's Alright for fighting at the end of the Aquaman premiere, Obi Trice, the Stones, just all sorts of memorable, great music that seemed to inhabit nearly every episode. But it's been a while since I remember anything they've played. Did they change the music supervisor or something?

I think that is sort of the point. He is the movie star, yet everyone around him is supposed to be more interesting.
I thought it was a great episode as well, and I'm on the East Coast.

The obnoxious dude-bro point of view would be easier to stand if, as the "Gayest. Named. Ever." author stated, they collided even once with something approaching conflict that wasn't resolved at the episode's end. But Vince always ends up with things in control and in his favor, and his slacker friends safely in tow. Insiders find charm at recognizing these characters, but who ever wanted to see these douchebags as protagonists? The vicarious thrill of seeing the moneyed hipster lifestyle (or reliving your own younger pussy/drug/alcohol-fueled days) wore off around episode three.
I would personally prefer to see ARI GOLD as a series, re-introducing Jay Mohr's character from "Action" as his arch-nemesis.
