Now here's a guy -- Slate's Dan Kois -- who thinks for himself and stands his ground. No go-alonger, he! The articles's about how Disney's Bambi II (i.e., one of those animated sequels-to-classics that everyone loks down upon) is better than the original.

I've never seen any of these sequels, other than the Pooh ones, but I'll tell you what the best Disney 2-D animation film since The Lion King is-- the straight-to-video Three Musketeers with Mickey, Donald and Goofy, produced by the TV animation unit. It looks nice, it's incredibly fast-paced, and it has a funny score of songs set to classical chestnuts like "Carmen"-- and it's a hundred times more entertaining than Brother Bear or Treasure Planet.

and there's always someone who swears that the Steve Martin's remake of Pink Panther was funnier than anything Peter Sellers did with the character.
The Disney remakes were just sitcom level scripts cranked out by the folks who devise their self-serving stage spectaculars. I had to sit through a few with a friend's kid.
if anything, this guy is angling for a job as Eisner's new houseboy.

For me it's not so much that the sequels "sully the image" of the originals or that they're "half-assed hack-work". I'm sure they're respectful to the originals and I'm sure a lot of people worked really hard to make them as good as they could be but I would hate to see Disney's core business become the recycling of old products instead of the creation of new ones.
Sure, the old Disney movies were taken from older stories, but at the time they offered something new in a cinematic way. What's new about Bambi II beyond some story turns?

Well, if you read his review, it turns out that "better" = "safer/more palatable/less traumatic".
Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

It's all a moot point anyway, as Steve Jobs insisted they kill this unit.
