It makes me cringe because I see this every day. My job puts me front and center of kids who freak out and scream and genuinely behave like demonic bastards. And what I can never fathom is why the parents don't do one of two things. A.) Pick up kid and leave or B.) beat snotty little bastard senseless. They usually choose C.) zone it out and ignore it, thus torturing all others in their proximity.

If my father EVER posted that on a blog, then said "best commercial ever", I'd be seriously and intensely hurt. I might not show it, or say it, but it would have a psychological impact.

And the Mark Steyn thing is that it's not about this specific kid. Ok, we all hate crying kids, etc etc. Just slap the fucking kid, put him in his place, like real parents used to do.

The problem is the tagline, which is solely there to transcend THIS kid, and make it about ALL kids, which is exactly what happens in spoiled, individualistic, affluent societies: children are demonized as a burden.

I have no idea what Steyn's position is, but I do know that plummeting European birthrates have become such a problem that the governments have begun offering cash rewards simply for having kids. My sister, who lives in Australia (close enough in temper to Europe), just had her first child and was given somewhere between $2000-$5000. Not a credit. Cash. So I can see why someone might take issue with a Euro ad promoting birth control, especially one with such a selfish hook, when it's the lack of births that is pointing to a potential crisis.

That said: funny ad! I don't know a single parent, myself included, who has ever not had a "what were we thinking?" moment.

NYCBusybody, quit being a douche. The commercial doesn't "demonize" children - it merely mines for humor (and sales) the whole notion of generation x-ish grownups who might not be quite ready for children. Are you really that stupid?

And do you really think Wells' would be heartbroken by his dad thinking this commercial is funny? Are you autistic? That's the only explanation I can think of for your seriously out-of-touch ideas.

I thought it was making the point that if you're not ready to be a father, don't be. I don't think it was trying to say all kids are spoiled demon-spawn.

Most kids that act up seem to do so because the parents haven't set the boundaries. I think that's supposed to be done during the 'terrible two's", when kids tend to try to test the limits of what they'll be allowed to do.

So when people, particularly young men, use "gay" or "faggy" synonomously with "bad" or "shitty", that's just humorous, right? Merely mining gay culture for humor?

Bullshit. Words and ideas mean things, even if they're just mainly about getting a laugh.

And yes, I agree there are too many people on the planet. Third World populations need to have fewer children, First world needs to have more.
