Chiullan on "Factory Girl" DVD

The unrated Factory Girl DVD (out tomorrow) is "among the best single-disc releases of the year thus far," writes HE columnist Moises Chiullan, "featuring not only the much more fleshed-out Unrated Cut of the film, but supplemental materials that aren't just there to fill space like so many other DVDs."

Chiullan adds, however, that he "really detest[s] the SEXY UNRATED UNCUT marketing design on the cover and spine, but that's the only qualm I have with the whole thing. I thought the theatrical poster would've made a great cover, and having SEXY UNRATED UNCUT on the spine makes it look like it's glorified softcore porn to a guest who sees it on my shelf."

I have a similar beef with the DVD cover for the movie "Exotica". Come to think of it, the title doesn't really help either, but the cover of that DVD with the schoolgirl dancer writhing in the spotlight on the front totally makes it look like something that should be on showtime at 2:00am rather than the sophisticated Atom Egoyan film it really is.

i saw the unrated dvd and it is very poorly directed and/or cut. they can put anything they want on it and it still wouldn't be worth buying. the movie is a mess and not nearly as sexy as advertised. guy pearce is fantastic, but the film is choppy, self indulgent and disorganized.

OddDuck- My fiancee picked Exotica off my shelf and said "what is...this?" My response: "the guy from L&O SVU's in it?" She also looked at the cover of Factory Girl and asked me "Sexy Unrated Uncut? what are you making me watch?"

I'm sorry to say it Rock, but you're right...it is not as sexy as advertised. You will have to jerk off to something else this week. I suggest porn.

MoisesChiu, that's funny. And it's not even the guy from SVU, although Chris Maloney and Elias Koteas look a lot alike. But seriously, what the heck were Erotica's producers thinking? There isn't even any real nudity in the movie - most people thinking they're in for some kind of sex romp are gonna be in for a real bore when they pop in the DVD.

There's 2 schools of thought here: You're either the guy who knows what Factory Girl is about, and don't care, you'll either rent it or not based on its merits, or you're the one that sees Sienna Miller as a tabloid queen in a "sexy, Unrated" flick. I suppose there is a 3rd idea, that you're aware of the movie and what it is all about, and still renting just for Sienna Miller's *ahem* assets.

George, did you find any source documentary materials about shock treatment? We're doing a doc about a woman who went through it in the late 50s and we need illustrative material, but it's not exactly something found at the AV Geeks archive.

Just read your post. The only source material I found re: Edie's electro shock was the footage from "Ciao Manhattan." According to the film's director, those were actual treatments that he filmed of her back in Santa Barbara. I'm sure plenty of archival material exists on the subject. I would check the numerous stock houses around or go to Getty Images.
