No telling how good Ben Affleck's Gone Baby Gone (Miramax, 10.19) may be, but the trailer is very well cut -- a solid indication of a pro-level thing. You can sort of tell that Casey Affleck gives a sharp, convincing performance as a Boston-area private dick. Morgan Freeman appears to be doing his excellent usual usual; ditto Michele Monaghan. It feels like this could be Mystic River and then some. You can't trust feelings and intimations, of course. The proof will be in the pudding, which I presume will be served at the Toronto Film Festival.

Hell of a cast. I mean, beyond the obvious (Freeman, Harris, etc.) - Amy Ryan and Michael K. Williams from "The Wire," and John Ashton. Nice to see him again.

Affleck's directorial style appears workmanlike. Nothing wrong with that I guess. I guess he figured since Mystic River comparisons are unavoidable, he might as well shoot it exactly the same way.

What's going on with Michelle Monaghan in these movies ("Gone, Baby, Gone" and "The Heartbreak Kid")? She's supposed to be the female lead and is barely in the trailers for both these movies.

I've read the script, James Leer, and her part is definitely co-lead. She'll have as much screentime as Casey Affleck, and even more of the emotive "big moments."

I'm finishing the book up this weekend. In my opinion, I think Casey looks great in this film and you just can't go wrong with Ed Harris and co. Yeah, this feels good and I hope it lives up to what has been an intense read so far.

Unless your feelings and intimations are about people you've invested years trashing on this website. Then it's alright to start reviewing THE LOVELY BONES before it even starts shooting.

I too was shocked at how little Michelle is in the trailer. I've read all of the Patrick Kenzie/Angela Gennaro books except "Gone Baby Gone," and was looking forward to this movie. But it looks like Ben has kicked Angela/Michelle to the curb and given the movie to his brother. It also looks like he's tossed the tone of the novels for the dead seriousness of Clint's "Mystic River." It may still be a good movie, but it looks like it's going to disappoint fans of the books like me.

I'm rooting for Affleck to prove wrong the chumps who think the only good thing he's done is Chasing Amy (if that) and actually believe that Goldman wrote the Good Will Hunting Script.

I'm not sure what's more amazing - how Benlike Casey looks there or that John Ashton is back and looking the exact same as he did in 1984. Heck I think that shotgun is the same one Taggart pulled out of his trunk when they went to get Victor Maitland!

I also was shocked at how little Monaghan was featured in the trailer, but who knows what that means. If the movie follows the book closely, Morgan Freeman's character isn't anywhere near as big as you'd guess from the trailer, for example.

I don't know if Affleck will cut it as a director, but he certainly did the smart thing by casting Harris in a role that's tailor-made for him. And it's great to see John Ashton again.

Give Ben credit for not taking the lead role himself. Of course, it's possible he may have felt he couldn't do an good job directing if he were also starring.

Casey's career hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire. When the highlight of your resume is being tenth billed in the Ocean's Eleven films, that's not exactly a great filmography. He could use what could be a huge break here.
