Paramount Home Video is releasing a boilerplate Zodiac DVD, containing the 157-minute theatrical version that played earlier this year, on 7.24.07. But the fans (i.e., guys like me) will have to wait until sometime next year to see the somewhat longer, even more obsessive version, which I'm guessing will be roughly three hours, give or take.

I'm trying to find out the particulars as we speak. Paramount Home Video is looking to siphon all the bucks it can out of this title, and that means doing the old double dip by delaying on the special edition. They all do it, it pisses everyone off, and nothing ever changes.

I'll wait until '08. Definitely one of the best films of the year...too bad it'll be all but ignored come Awards time...well maybe with the exception of Robert Downey Jr.

They can sell the same movies over and over again because moron consumers buy them over and over again. (It's what Mad Magazine once called "The Law Of Supply And Idiots.") If people would simply stop buying the movie-only discs when they first come out, the practice would stop.

Yeah, with that kind of attitude, nothing will change. I'd love to own this on DVD, but I'll wait. (Of course, the fact that I have no disposable income to spend on buying DVDs once let alone twice does play a role.)

At least they are being up front about the Director's Cut edition. Most of the time, they release the theatrical version and then you see the Director's Cut four months later. That's what pisses me off!

Only three hours? The obsessive version ought to be at least six hours! No, better yet, make that twelve hours! I'm waiting for the obsessive's four-disc box set.

There is absolutely no reason to be upset about this strategy. Fincher-style special editions take time, and they are being very upfront about this. David Prior also offered this insight at Home Theater Forum:

"Before you all get too bent out of shape about the staggered release dates of the vanilla and the director's cut, you should be aware that it was only reluctantly agreed to by Fincher because I needed more time on the bonus material. The studio was locked into their release date (and bound and determined to release a single-disc, which nobody except them wanted), so Fincher allowed that to be released first.

It had nothing to do with Fincher "double dipping his own movie before it even makes it to stores" and everything to do with buying more time for the special edition.

Hope that clears things up. In the interests of full disclosure, you should also know that the theatrical cut will only be available on the single disc.

Cheers."

Thanks for clairifying this. I am still ok with the fact that I will have the bare bones DVD in a few weeks and I know I will buy the special edition too. I love this movie. What can I say! It is not the first time I have bought a few copies of the same movie.

I too would encourage everyone to rent rather than buy the bare bones disc if you really need that Fincher fix, if only for that Quixotic hope that someday the suits will get that double-dips suck donkey dick. The long wait for the Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut was well worth it.
