"He is everyone, he is no one." The trailer for Todd Haynes' I'm Not There (Weinstein Co., 11.21) is up at IGN, although you'll have to watch a U.S. Army recruitment ad first. Here's a non-Army recruitment version. "All I can do is be me. Whoever that is."

I got a VW ad before the trailer.

Pic looks good 'n all but Richard Gere seems outta place in this whole thing and Cate Blanchett is probably the stand-out.

I agree source188, Richard Gere doesn't really work in this. Stephen Rea would have been a much better choice to play an older Dylan.

The trailer doesn't look half bad, but I'm still not sold on the whole concept...Although I can't wait for the soundtrack.

I think the presence of Gere is necessary to underline the "He is everyone," theme. Without Gere, there would be no one who has a previously well-defined persona playing Dylan, just a bunch of actors, some of them better and more recognizable than the others, but still fundamentally actors. Gere is something other than just an actor--he's also a "personality," a "celebrity" or some such thing. And as such, he's so NOT like Dylan, but I think that's kind of the point.

This looks pretty damned awesome to me. Some great images in there.

I'm assuming these guys had the rights to whatever music they wanted to use, which is going to help a lot.

And with the shots of Gere playing the "oldest" Dylan, I'm wondering how far into his career this movie goes--it doesn't look like they're doing anything post-1975. Which is kind of a shame, because the "persona" Dylan has now is just as enigmatic and interesting as anything that came before.

The official description that's been making the rounds for awhile (for example, at the sales company's website describes Bale's character as "a folk idol who reinvents himself as an evangelist" and that it ends with "a mature man in his late 50s," which would seem to put it well past the mid-1970s.

the trailer seems to spell out the movie's approach pretty clearly--that it's not about a story so much as an idea. not always a reassuring admission for a film to make, but i think with a filmmaker as academic as haynes, it works like an abstract before the thesis itself. i think it's pretty effective.

the images do look beautiful, but then, haynes knows how to make pretty things.

Uh...Richard Gere isn't the one who I'd peg as "out of place" based on those six photos.

Seriously though, I'm really, really, really looking forward to seeing this when it plays in San Antonio 6 months after its released.

Bob Violence: The picture of Gere as Bob above sure doesn't look like Dylan in his 50's, which would be sometime in the 90's. He sure wasn't wearing those glasses, that hat, or that moustache. Actually, I don't know what era that would be from, as he looks more like a dirtier Sgt. Pepper's-era Lennon with a diff. hat.

Even if the film takes us through the born-again Christian phase, which would be late 70's/early 80's, Dylan was sporting the big curly hair, and no facial hair aside from some scruff. You can look at most of the album covers to see how he was rolling each year.

The kid second from right doesn't look much like Dylan either. Not to sound pretentious, but you're looking at this in conventional biopic terms, which isn't what Haynes is doing. None of the characters are even named "Bob Dylan" (or "Robert Zimmerman", for that matter).

Of course I'm looking forward to this. But then again, I was looking forward to "Masked and Anonymous." And that was quite possibly one of the most unwatchable movies ever.
