To promote a big fat Comic-Con piece by critic Luke Y. Thompson, the Orange County Weekly has put the the rainbow-haired critic on the cover of this week's issue. A very flattering illustration (i.e., Thompson isn't exactly a hard-bod superhero type in actuality) but I shouldn't quibble. I'm presuming that journo-critics everywhere are envious. The article catches the old San Diego "Con" vibe, but I'm still not sorry I skipped it this year.

Gondry wrote it, D.Z., so it's not hack work. It does looks colossally stupid, however, which is a completely different matter. After the immensely personal Science of Sleep, which was so far away from Hollywood aesthetically & geographically, this seems like an attempt to get mainstream clout while still operating in lo-fi mode. I don't know if it's a total sellout, but it's certainly not what I'd like to be seeing next from him.

Mos Def is always welcome though. Love that guy.

D.Z., go fuck yourself. Michael Gondry is an acchomplished musician and playwrite. Michel Gondry, no relation, is also a true talent. I hear he directs stuff.

There is nothing sellout about that movie. Hell, the trailer reminds me why I used to like Jack Black. I love movies about people creating.

If you only go to the Com for movie news and nothing else, the crowds are getting unmanageable. But I like the rest of it, too.

The people at the Voice are actually quite happy, as my live-blogging was for them too. The readers of the Voice, who knows.

What can I say -- I blogged as much as I could from the LA Film Fest -- didn't have a laptop for it, and unlike Comic-Con, you can't really liveblog as such during a movie screening as in a panel discussion.

I blogged more from LAFF than I think any other VVM critic has from any other fest...if CJKennedy did more than two blog posts a day, my congrats.

In terms of word count, I think I came out pretty well. If you go here:
