Norton writing Hulk
A moderately diverting piece about Edward Norton's screenwriting adventures, most recently (and in fact presently) on the new Incredible Hulk film, as reported by L.A. Times "Scriptland" columnist Jay A. Fernandez. (Was it ever settled about Norton's Hulk being gray and not green? If the producers have any balls they'll go with the former. How can anyone look at a green Hulk and not be reminded of Ang Lee?)

Zak Penn did a number of re-writes, all of which were rejected. Norton came in and volunteered (or better yet agreed to be in the film if) to write the screenplay, now I don't know if it's from scratch but it must be as it would quite pointless and brainless to be doing re-writes of a script that was rejected time and time again. And according to a comingsoon.net article, Norton is writing the movie as production moves along so I'm sure Norton is more in charge of this movie than even the director is and in that I confide. Come one, admit it, better off that Norton is running the shots than Zak Penn and Louis Leterrier....no matter how "dick-like" it may seem of Norton.

You're out of your mind. You either have bad information or have no reading comprehension. "He did a number of re-writes, all of which were rejected." He wrote the script that started it all!
Zak Penn came up with the approach for the sequel, the plot, the character, the structure, the dialogue, and the villains. He figured out how they were going to depart from Ang Lee's film tonally. He came up with everything. He wrote several drafts (which you do on every project -- I've written more than ten sometimes) that were all accepted at Marvel Films and loved.
That's why he's writing The Avengers and several other projects for him, and that's why they got all the big name (sans Mr. Transporter) on to the project. Because of his script. When Norton asked if he could do a pass on the script, they said, "yes." Why? He may be a great writer, but they just didn't want to lose their lead. He does this on all his movies now. If they say no, he walks. End of story.

Still remember, at the end of the day, it's not just an Ed Norton screenplay. It's a rewrite of an existing screenplay. If you gave Ed Norton a copy of Final Draft, a laptop, and a bottle of scotch and said, "go write a super hero film" it may be interesting...but what the fuck does he know about writing an entertaining mainstream blockbuster? I guarantee the movie would be fascinating, and we'd talk about it for weeks, but Marvel would never hire Norton to write a film this important from scratch. And no matter how much involvement he'll have in the movie, it's not like it will ever be solely an Ed Norton joint.

Do you know what a pass is? You take a script and say, "maybe he should have a monologue here." "Maybe we should cut out this scene." "Let's have the opening be at a wedding." You tinker with an EXISTING SCRIPT.
Watch, I guarantee that Zak Penn will get sole credit on the final film. Again, Norton may be improving the EXISTING SCRIPT but nothing Penn wrote was rejected.

Scott Frank did a month of work on A Night at the Museum before they went into production. If someone says, "Scott Frank, didn't you write Night at the Museum?" He'd say, "I did some work on it." Or, "I did a pass on it." Or, "I did a production rewrite." He'd never say, "I wrote Night at the Museum." That's the difference between Scott Frank, any professional screenwriter in town, and Ed Norton and you. I've never once implied the film will be worse because of his involvement. But he's not "the writer of The Incredible Hulk."
I'm done here. You're just going to be an asshole and never admit you're wrong. It's not like I'd think badly of you. I'd think you were a classy dude.

I think it's interesting how the film has slowly changed from being a loose sequel to the Ang Lee version, to a Hulk Begins type of a thing. And while I'm a fan of a well crafter mindless action film (Shoot 'Em Up is a goddamn riot), having the director of Transporter 2 tackling this project still rubs me the wrong way. There were a lot of things I dug about Danny the Dog/Unleashed, but I'm sure Marvel has a reason for using this guy.
Favreau and Vaughn are genius choices, and we already know (or are pretty sure) that the first one panned out. Let's hope Besson's protege does a good job on this one.

Ed Norton would take credit for just about everything if he could.
Hulk is a Zak Penn script.
Norton's contribution was probably something like 10-25%. But if the movie is a disaster he'll say he just touched up his own dialogue.

In all the early pre-release teaser stuff, he's green albeit a different shade of such.
What you've got to understand is that making Hulk gray is more than a stylistic decision as far as basic Hulk mythology is concerned, so with Marvel making the movie on their own it probably wouldn't be done arbitrarily: "Gray Hulk" is a wholly different "version" of Banner's angrier-half, with a seperate personality. So far, I haven't heard any mention of this character being in the movie (it wouldn't make sense, as one of the heavies is supposed to be "Abomination," ANOTHER hulk-sized monster who's gray.)

Rothchild, my honest thanks for setting a Norton fanboy straight on how things actually work. Zak Penn is Marvel's go-to guy. What's he written, like half their projects. Do the math. Just because Norton's a good actor doesn't mean he's a great writer.
