Does anyone actually like this place? I hae had it a few times and found it very mediocre every time. Hell, when i lived across the street from Pinks I would just go to the bacon wrap hot dog vender that stood next door and get a better hot dog at half the price and no line.
I've never had a hot dog. Or a salad. Someone should make a documentary about me. When I tell people that they usually react with a combination of fascination, pity and disgust.
I used to be baffled by the attraction to this place and the justification of waiting in line for possibly the shittiest hot dogs in the continental United States until I realized that this is the place most new arrivals to Los Angeles go to find a dealer. If you want a decent dog, an independent street vendor is your best bet, especially if you don't want to get puked on by some 17 year old Lohan wannabe pretending that she actually might eat someting non-alcoholic.

It was good but nothing to seek out as an LA requirement. I do have at least one fond memory of standing on the street corner waiting, but the fact that we were waiting for Pink's was inconsequential.
You don't go to Pink's just for a hot dog, although the dogs are good. Just like you don't go to Superdawg in Chicago or Grey's Papaya in New York City just for the dogs. You go for the communal experience. Just like when we go to the movies at a theatre. We don't go just for the movie.
And Wells, I have to argue the time of the photo with you. Last night, in Los Angeles, sunset didn't occur until 7:39PM, yet in your photo, it's completely dark an hour plus before dusk. Since I live about six blocks from Pink's and happened to be out at 6:25 yesterday, I know it wasn't that dark at that time.
I have been to Pink's exactly one time and I waited in line behind Jerry Bruckheimer, who was reading one of his CSI scripts. He sped off in a Ferrari with some alpha-douche license plate reading KICKAZZ or some shit.
And yes, it is amazing to me that a supposedly health-conscious town like Los Angeles so enthusiastically supports a friggin hot dog shop. Then again, I've seen more doughnut shops here than any other place I've ever lived.
I'm with Ed Havens- so let me add Rodeo Reds and Franks for the Memories to some Chicago land classics. And I do love Gray's Papaya. Nathan's dogs are better at home off the grill, but sometimes Nathan's at Coney is just something to do. Although I now exclusively think about "Requiem for a Dream" when I think about coney Island.

And yeah, Pink's, what's the big deal. But LA isn't a hot dog town. Hot dog towns are settled by northern European immigrants, like Chicago or Detroit. LA was settled by Okies, it's a great hamburger town.
pinks is one of the few places in la that welcomes a communal vibe. i love their crunchy chili dogs and if ya don't want to wait in line, get there at 11 am or between 2-4.
Did you know that Harlan Ellison once wrote a short story about debating Russian literature with a Pink's clerk in the middle of the night? I believe it was called Prince Myshkin, Hold the Relish. It's a pretty funny story and I wouldn't be surprised if it was true.
I tracked down Pink's as a result of reading that story and I've always liked it. I don't go for the guacamole bacon mashed potato dogs. Onions, kraut and mustard are fine. Not as good as a Vienna from a street vendor in Chicago, but pretty good.

I drive by Pinks almost every day and see that line. I don't get it either. I try it once a year just to see if I'm missing something and discover I was right, their dogs suck.
I'm not surprised if David Lynch was there. A scene in Mulholland Drive was shot there. However, the only celebrity I ever met in line at Pinks was Ruth Buzzi.
Chicago style hot dogs are disgusting. Those horrible seeds and that gross slice of pickle mixed with sweet relish. Not to mention the tomatoes and onions and god knows what else. I guess all that crap is designed to disguise the crappy flavor of the "100% Vienna Beef" that joints always inexplicably advertise. They should say "100% Absolute Shit."
Give me a hot Italian beef, extra peppers instead, please.
I get a Chi-dog and an Italian Beef at the same time- there is a great Italian Beef/Chicago Dog place in Irvine- worth a little bit of a drive- I think it is called Chicago's Best, and you shoudl get the beef and sausage combo.
