For a recent meeting in Manila with Phillipine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at the Presidential palace, Quentin Tarantino wore "a traditional Filipino formal shirt called Barong Tagalog but [ also] wore sandals," says an 8.16 report in The West. "He was handed size 13 black leather shoes because sandals and rubber shoes are not allowed inside the palace during presidential ceremonies, a staff of the National Commission on Culture and Arts said."

What kind of an elitist swaggering attitude do you have to have to figure it's cool to wear sandals to a meeting with a chief of state? Was Tarantino brought up in a barn? Anyone with a vestige of breeding would arrive for a meeting with any head of state wearing at least a sport jacket and some kind of leather footwear. The guy's an animal.

Son of Douche had his moment. He owns the early to mid 90's. Possibly one of the most important cultural figures of the time. But since then he's done nothing. Can't grow up. Could've been some weird hybrid of DePalma/Godard, but it seems to me, judging from his last two movies, that what he likes to do the most is get stoned, order in hookers, and watch Escape from Witch Mountain on an endless loop. PTA has lapped him. The problem is that QT is obsessed with QT. He's his own fanatic. Whereas he used to want to make movies like his heroes, now he just wants to make movies like himself. God bless this enormous bastard. He's got a long way to go to get to the bottom and I have the feeling it's going to take forever for him to get there. He's going to end up like Russ Myer, drooling in his diapers, high up in those Hollywood Hills, a Chinese nurse injecting B-12 into the tip of his penis every 6 hours while he plays Crazy Buddha to the next three generations of hack directors.

QT doesn't have the brains or the compassion to 1) risk embarassing himself like PTA does; 2) Use his film acumen in service of the story and less in service of look how frickin cool I am. If you watch PDL again, you'll see Anderson use the Lens Flare, that staple of 70's naturalism, as Content, and not just some hipster tic, like QT does with almost all of his formal tricks, viz the quick zoom in Kill Bill. With the exception of Jon Brion's overbearing score, PDL is a movie completely out of QT's ken. "The Adam Sandler Film." Have you listened to the dialogue PTA wrote for Sandler, all the little self-loathing diatribes Barry mumbles under his breath, practically underneath the sound design? PTA's movies are about vulnerable people saying vulnerable things. It takes a lot of balls to write that way and direct actors that way. QT is all pose. He hasn't had an honest human thought since Resevoir Dogs. He's a momma's boy with long toes. I could think of no one more irritating in this world to spend more than five minutes with than Quentin Tarantino. Right? RIGHT? RIIIGGHHHTTTTT!

Not gonna deny PTA's natural talent, but his slide into pretentiousness is more offensive to me than Quentin's fetishistic tics and niche obsessions.

Boogie Nights is great and PDL is, uhhh, the best thing Sandler's ever done (compliment, i guess). But my God, was Magnolia painful as FUCK for me to sit through. I love ensemble pieces but Jesus, those characters just seemed like miserable, uninteresting saps.

I'm just not sure what PTA film is as mature and assured as Jackie Brown. You say PDL is out of Quentin's league because it shows vulnerable people saying vulnerable things. Well, I think JB shows vulnerable people acting tough when in reality they're scared shitless and/or confused, which is a helluva lot more interesting and difficult to pull off than what PTA does with Sandler (whatever that is...).

You say Paul Thomas Anderson has "lapped" Quentin but when you really break down their work (unless I'm missing something) you have RD, PF, JB (Kill Bill and Death Proof as lesser works) for Quentin and Boogie Nights, Magnolia, PDL (Sydney) for Anderson. If anything, I'd say PTA has a lot of catching before he can honestly be considered the more prolific filmmaker of the two.
