Too many parties

All the big film festivals are front-loaded. The first five or six days always seem to comprise 85% or 90% of the ballgame. Not to complain and par for the course, but the first weekend of the Toronto Film Festival -- Friday, 9.7 to Sunday, 9.9 -- is fairly jammed with parties. Saturday stands out with three big 'uns happening almost simultaneously. A No Country for Old Men dinner party and the annual Sony Pictures Classics party at Michelle's Brasserie starting at 8 pm, and then the doors opening for a Fox Searchlight party for Juno, The Savages and Under The Same Moon at 8:30 pm. Too many balls in the air.

I don't generally make it to many parties in Toronto, so I can't speak aboutthat schedule. But Thursday, Friday and Saturday are getting jammed up with screenings and press conferences and interviews. In the first three days alone, I'm supposed to see THE BRAVE ONE, JESSE JAMES, MICHAEL CLAYTON, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, RENDITION, EASTERN PROMISES, JUNO, THE GIRL IN THE PARK and the JOY DIVISION documentary, as well as covering the BRAVE ONE, JESSE and CLAYTON press conferences and doing interviews on EASTERN and perhaps UNIVERSE. People always think the festival sounds like a glamour assignment (and it is, to some degree), but in between seeing all these films and meeting everyone you actually have to file stories and reviews, too, and the schedules are always shifting. No Midnight Madness for me this year!

it would be a shift in thinking if press attending didn't concentrate on the titles that are set to be released in the next few weeks - the festival has over 200 films right? - but seek out the films that are briliiant but will never see the light of day

berg, the problem is that many of us have to cover these movies coming out in the next few weeks and Toronto is our only opportunity to cover them because the studios aren't making much of an effort to show them to us beforehand.

Jeff, isn't the Sony Classics party on Monday night the 10th? that's where I have it on my schedule... or is this another one?
