Discland
edited by Jonathan Doyle
Mafioso (The Criterion Collection, 3.18.2008) Nino Badalamenti is a supervisor in a car manufacturing plant who hasn't taken a vacation in over two years. On his way out the door to visit his beloved childhood hometown of Sicily -- with his blonde wife and daughters -- Nino is handed a package by his boss and asked to deliver it to a powerful and influential Sicilian gangster named Don Vincenzo. Once in Sicily, Nino has a hoot seeing friends and family, but his wife has trouble fitting in and is unfairly dismissed as a snob by Nino's family. Even more worrisome, Nino finds himself entangled in an intricate web of secret mafioso dealings and is eventually sent on an unexpectedly... elaborate errand. (continued)

"Yuma" sneak

James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma will have a nationwide sneak on Sunday night. The Lionsgate marketers are encouraged by the numbers (they out-pointedShoot 'Em Up in today's tracking) but they obviously want to bump things up before next Friday's (9.7) opening, and they're convinced they've got a word-of-mouther.

The review in "The New Yorker" finally got me all excited. Especially the news that Peter Fonda brings his A game, I was tickled by him in GHOST RIDER but also sad he was in it at all.

The picture's completely middlebrow, so it could do well.

Went to another preview screening last night with civilians, not industryites. This movie plays really, really well with audiences.

And BTW: Reading Devin's review made me think of what it must be like to be a child wondering why grown-ups like certain things. Sorry, Devin, but that's how you phrased it.

I read little Devin's laughable review, too; as I did I was reminded of Dennis Leary's line: "Kids don't know shit about shit."

Wait, was I underwhelmed by the film because I'm a 'kid,' or did you guys really like it because you're middle aged farts who go for the middlebrow?

Nothing wrong with either scenario.

Not especially. I did not care for any of the pictures nominated for best picture last year. would have given the Oscar to Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth, Casino Royale, The Fountain or even Batman Begins.
