"For an aspiring romp awash in sex and nudity, Mark Helfrich's Good Luck, Chuck proves painfully flaccid -- a movie that simultaneously squanders its leads and its DVD extras. Dane Cook sells out arenas with his stand-up act, and Jessica Alba is, well, Jessica Alba, but once Chuck exhausts their devoted bases, this doesn't promise to bring much good luck to Lionsgate." -- from Brian Lowry's Variety review.
A voice is telling me reviews of this sort won't matter when it comes to ticket sales this weekend. (Chuck will probably run a close second to Resident Evil: Extinction.) If a problem of any kind develops, it may be because of what a friend told me this morning: "This is a movie in which Dane Cook is naked in some scenes and Jessica Alba is naked in none. Now, what's wrong with that concept?"

Obviouisly they're going for the gay fratboy demographic.

I knew she wouldn't get nude. Why does she even bother?

I cannot, and do not desire to, argue with that sentiment. Beautiful. I just watched AWAY FROM HER on DVD, and Julie Christie didn't even show her tits! Why did she even fucking show up?!

It's been mentioned elsewhere but there is a crazy marketing campaign going on. The whole getting married plan and then the slapstick comedy ads. This has got to be the weirdest blitz I've ever seen. I think all you guys are overestimating Cook's appeal this exact same movie was made about a year ago, Cook plus a cute bad actress equaled failure with Employee of the Month. I think you could re-release Knocked Up this week and take the number 2 spot.

As has been pointed out elsewhere, apparently EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH was a huge hit on DVD, which is where I imagine the direction of Dane Cook's career is headed after a few more theatrical attempts.

How exactly does one squander the talents of Cook and Alba?

I like Ms. Alba too but comparing her to Julie Christie is wrong on so many different levels.

Hey DZ...
Christie can act, she doesn't have to show anything to warrant her being cast in a film. Alba cannot say the same.

Question: If Jessica Alba in GOOD LUCK CHUCK was to be interchanged with Michelle Monaghan in THE HEARTBREAK KID remake, would audiences really care?

Michelle Monaghan is America's Sweetheart. We just don't know it yet.

Why is it that the most lightweight, glorified pinup, can't-act types are also the biggest prudes?
Look at every actress who's won major awards and/or the respect of critics and their peers in the last ten or twenty years. They've all done nudity and sex scenes. So what are these creampuff underwear models trying to prove?

Terry, speaking for this audience of one: No, but mostly because I'm not going to see either movie. I'm not sure if you're saying something broader about both actresses, however. They're both cute as hell, but I'd rather have Michelle Monaghan to dinner.
Frankbooth, perhaps these underwear models are smart to realize that the only thing they have going for them is people wanting to see them naked. Once they give up the goods, it's pretty much over for them unless they have something else to offer.

Jessica Alba is the poster girl for generation no-talent. She's a privileged girl, so she brings no edge to the table. She's good looking, but in an uninspiring kind of way. She's a got a fuck me mouth without a fuck me attitude. She's also not clearly white or Latin, so she brings no strong sense of ethnicity. She just sucks on so many levels.

I'm not saying Jessica Alba is a good actress, but she is smart enough to know that her career longevity is closely connected with being a tease -- if she shows her vagina while getting out of a car at a club or getting naked in a lot of movies, all of the allure and mystery is gone.
