My suspension of disbelief falls apart whenever anyone in a movie lights up indoors. This always makes me shift in my seat and say to myself, "Jeez, now the place is going to reek of cigarette smoke...why doesn't the guy go outside or at least open a window?" And I really can't stand it when a character lights up inside a car without opening the windows because you can always smell it the next day and the day after, even if it was only one person smoking a single cigarette, and it's always rancid and repulsive.

Does that apply to movies set during the 70 or so years of the 20th century when EVERYONE did that?

Well, you know, this is why I like Jeff so much. You may disagree with him if you are cordial; he may even be persuaded to change his mind, but come rain or shine you always know where you stand with him, and I can absoulutely respect that.

I was thinking of Mad Men too... but they do it so naturally and effortlessly you barely notice after the first few episodes. Excellent show, by the way.

And what about GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, where both Murrow and Friendly were constantly puffing away, just as they did in real life?
They both also died of lung cancer, making GNAGL a very effective anti-smoking (as well as anti-McCarthy) statement.

I'm with Jeff. While I'm generally libertarian, when it comes to cigarette smoking, I'm an intolerant, fundamentalist bigot. I see someone smoking, and I immediately associate them with the dimwits that leave behind the cigarette butts that litter the streets and parks (LA County says the single largest item of garbage they pick up off the beaches are cigarette butts). To say nothing of the complete asswipes who toss lit cigarettes from their cars at 70 miles an hour, here in drought stricken CA.

MAD MEN is beautifully shot and full of shit. it's SOPRANOS dressed up as sleazy advertising men so the male audience can revel in the sexism and smoke. a show actually about the psychological manipulation of advertisers wouldn't get on the air.
i was at a party last night and some people lit up cigs -- INDOORS!
i immediately thought of jeff and chastised them as they kicked me out.

The smoking in "Mad Men" is not unnoticeable. It's almost always done in an ironic, look-back way -- OB-GYN's smoking during examinations, men smoking in bed, mothers smoking at the dinner table with their children.
"Crimson Tide" always bugged me. They're smoking IN A SUBMARINE. But of course, it's a Tony Scott flick. So they must smoke.

Jeff's gonna have a blast with Darjeeling Limited. Almost enough to make me want to quit smoking.
Almost.

I was a pack and a half a day smoker and quit smoking in one 30-minute treatment with laser therapy. I went to a company called Freedom Laser Therapy that provides a pain free low-level laser procedure which helps alleviate nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The staff at Freedom Laser Therapy is dedicated and passionate about helping smokers end their nicotine addiction.
I would really recommend laser therapy to help you quit smoking.
