Mafioso (The Criterion Collection, 3.18.2008) Nino Badalamenti is a supervisor in a car manufacturing plant who hasn't taken a vacation in over two years. On his way out the door to visit his beloved childhood hometown of Sicily -- with his blonde wife and daughters -- Nino is handed a package by his boss and asked to deliver it to a powerful and influential Sicilian gangster named Don Vincenzo. Once in Sicily, Nino has a hoot seeing friends and family, but his wife has trouble fitting in and is unfairly dismissed as a snob by Nino's family. Even more worrisome, Nino finds himself entangled in an intricate web of secret mafioso dealings and is eventually sent on an unexpectedly... elaborate errand. (continued)

Letterman and Hilton

Letterman: "A hard-boiled egg and an orange? Gee, you can't go wrong there." Hilton: "Yeah, but [the jail experience] is over and I don't want to talk about it any more." Letterman: "Uh-huh...well, this, this is where you and I differ because this is all I want to talk about." You might think you're sick of this but watch this...happened last night. The way she turns on the sniffles when Letterman won't let up is exactly how this empty vessel got out of jail the first time...before they sent her back.

I can hardly wait until Letterman has Judith Miller and Scooter Libby on his show. He'd sure make a better interviewer for those two than Tim Russert and Chris Matthews.

It is a shame that Emile Hirsh, who gives a magnificent performance in one of the best films of the year, had to be on second after this useless piece of trash.

Unanswered here is why this waste of oxygen was even on the show--again--in the first place. Surely they can't be THAT hard up for guests, most Letterman viewers couldn't care less about her, and if it was a ratings ploy, why put her on Friday, the lowest-watched day of the week?

Well I don't think anyone was laughing with her during that segment...definitely at here and with Dave. I know it's the nature of the beast to show up on talk shows even though they may ridicule you night and day, but seriously, she has no dignity. It's disturbingly sad in a way.

I agree with Bacio. Why even have her on the show in the first place if you don't care about her, don't like her, and don't have anything important to ask her? Was it that important to have someone on the show to promote a perfume line and a shitty direct to DVD movie?

I hate Paris Hilton. But she'll never go away unless people learn to just ignore her. This stunt just made Paris look like she was ambushed and it made Dave look like a mean asshole.

At least put her on second or third, there are much better people that deserve the first spot.

check out harvey pekar's early appearances and watch how dave belittles him because he's just a working stiff without letterman's vast tv power.

Cadavra [TypeKey Profile Page] says ...

George, my outrage is based on the fact that there are literally thousands of people that Dave could have had on who would have been infinitely more interesting guests. The bottom line is that Hilton is a dilletante in every sense of the word, and every movie role she takes, no matter how shitty the movie will be, is a role she takes away from a working-stiff actress who could've used the money (not just to pay the rent, but SAG members must earn a certain amount annually to maintain their health coverage).

I never thought he belittled Pekar, just poked fun at him for being a combative misanthrope.

That was a long time ago though and I might think differently now that I'm a combative misanthrope myself.

Having said that, I finally caved in and watched this clip and it was kind of nauseating. Not because she's a vacuous whore, but because we're all complicit in her promotion. You, Letterman, me, all of us. I should've follwed my first instinct and ignored it.

speak for yourself, guys and gals. i can't even look at the still frame of the clip much less imbibe the vacuity.

i remember watching pekar from the git-go back in the day on letterman and dave was always insulting to him in a classist way. i don't think there's ever been a more dramatic and honest letterman guest moment than when harvey brought up GE and dave being a silent shill. hell, nbc didn't even censor the spot unlike cbs who cut bill hick's entire segment with nary a pip from brave dave.

here be pekar:
