Great interview, Jeffrey (except for your clumsy attempt to go "topical" by drawing a moral equivalence between Islamic jihadists and members of the Bush team.... funny, I don't recall William Kristol flying a 767 into a building...)

Anyway, I find it interesting that Lumet talks about Wyler the way he does. It's the first time that I thought of the two directors as being similar in that respect. That is, Wyler's films, as he points out, were very highly regarded and popular and yet Wyler himself doesn't seem to get a lot of credit as a great director.

Interesting because to some degree one could say the same thing about Lumet.

A couple of years ago I jotted down a list of my 100 favorite movies, (because I'm a nerd and that's what we do... it was sort of my own AFI thing). Until then I never would have thought to mention that one of my favorite directors was Sidney Lumet. And yet, who had more films on my list than anyone else? Ol' Sidney.

Child's Play was based on a popular Broadway play that had a long afterlife in regional and community theaters. (I actually had a small role in a New Orleans production during the early '70s.)Oddly enough, though, the play is mostly forgotten these days, and when you mention the title, most people think only of movies with killer dolls. I remember Lumet's film as being somewhat disappointing. Wish they would have kept Fritz Weaver from the originl Broadway production, and Marlon Brando, who was originally supposed to play the role that Robert Preston wound up doing. (As I recall, the producer fired Brando -- and there were rumors that he did so primarily so he could brag to people that "I fired Brando." No, that's not a joke.)
