I caught Diving Bell at TIFF and, while it's an inventive and artful film, it doesn't have the weight or sophistication of most Palme d'or winners. I haven't seen 4 Months... yet, but I've yet to speak to anyone who preferred Diving Bell. And if Diving Bell was so close to the Palme d'or, why did they give two other films the Jury Prize. This is generally considered the runner-up prize, isn't it? And while I liked Diving Bell more than Persepolis, I don't think any serious cinephile could rank it above the astonishing Silent Light.

I liked Battle in Heaven, really liked Japon, and LOVED Silent Light. It really is a masterpiece, particularly if you have an appetite for films like Ordet, Stroszek, and La Vie de Jesus.

Then you're gonna love this movie, Milkman. The last reel feels like it was actually directed by Carl Dreyer. And the visual style throughout has the very precise widescreen compositions and Bressonian performance style of Dumont's work. In fact, it plays more like a Dumont or Dreyer film than a Carlos Reygadas film.

I love the Bressonian model of performance for the cinema. I don't care what anyone says. I get claustrophobic when actors impose their emotions on me. I feel the same way in my daily interactions with people; don't indicate how you're feeling. When it comes to movies, the less emotion wafting from the actors the better. It opens the movie up for me, allowing a space for me to feel whatever it is that I'm feeling, if I'm feeling anything at all. And JD, have you ever heard of Richard Maxwell? He's a playwright and you might like his stuff.
