Mafioso (The Criterion Collection, 3.18.2008) Nino Badalamenti is a supervisor in a car manufacturing plant who hasn't taken a vacation in over two years. On his way out the door to visit his beloved childhood hometown of Sicily -- with his blonde wife and daughters -- Nino is handed a package by his boss and asked to deliver it to a powerful and influential Sicilian gangster named Don Vincenzo. Once in Sicily, Nino has a hoot seeing friends and family, but his wife has trouble fitting in and is unfairly dismissed as a snob by Nino's family. Even more worrisome, Nino finds himself entangled in an intricate web of secret mafioso dealings and is eventually sent on an unexpectedly... elaborate errand. (continued)

Tapley's new Variety duties

In Contention's Kris Tapley has been asked to both edit and write a new Oscar season bloggy-blog for Variety. This is the "fairly substantial announcement" he's been promising on his site for the last couple of weeks, the one that will "explain the slow-down of activity here and my absence from this year's Gurus line-up."

Couldn't have let the guy make his own announcement, could you, Jeff? I suppose that's your job, to break the news, but from one blogger to another, I'm surprised you couldn't let Kris announce it himself. FYI, I think it's going to turn out great and it'll bring a fresh perspective to the website. Might just give you a run for your money...

Standards are dropping at Variety. Tapsey is a woefully inept writer, lacking style, grace and persuasion, but as for you, you arrogant little amateur, Jeff is your "fellow, MirajeffAICN, the same way that a tsetse fly is a "fellow" of sleeping sickness.

You are nothing more than a barely literate ignoramus, a gormless geek who made a laughing stock of yourself in public and now have the galloping gall to boast of it; you are far better off posting with the other clueless cretins at AICN rather than persistently posting here, where you are a figure of contempt and scorn, a hapless, hopeless Uriah Heep figure with the compositional skills of a cro-magnon; the sort of ill-educated idiot who thinks "paragraph" is some sort of diagram that jumps out of airplanes, and hubris is a variety of handbag.

Wells to MiraJeffAICN: That "a big announcement is coming" announcement on In Contention had been up for several days and was starting to get on my nerves, and when I asked Kris about it on a personal basis he made no mention, so when I was told about the deal yesterday I figured it was time to pop the balloon. Life in the Big City. Kris will do a good job -- it's going to be fun to respond to his stuff.

That's a good one coming from you, Ian. You know BurmaShave put a bounty on your head last week. I pity the child who has to grow up with a father who posts everyday in the H-E talkbacks. If I'm still on these threads in 20 years when I have a kid, God forgive me. And Ian, if you'd like to write something, or want to send me a sample, I'd be happy to show it to the folks at V. We'll see how low their standards have dropped, according to you. Your insults are very clever though, I wonder how long it took you to think of them. You mean hubris isn't a variety of handbag? Get a life you sad, pathetic old man.

How I would have liked to say "touche" but, alas, you don't have the wherewithal to match wits with me. As for the insults, they were easy to come up with, as you are such a full well to draw from. As for getting a life, I have three children, no mortgages, good health, a happy marriage, three cars, four homes in three countries and a toucan named Charlie whom I have trained to whistle the Colonel Bogey march. You could use a new tune yourself.

Not to put too fine a point on it but I don't think HE will BE AROUND in 20 years. I give it ten years tops. By 20 I hope Jeff is living somewhere hot and beachy and enjoying his well-deserved retirement.

As for posting on these boards if you have kids - well I have a kid and there the one thing you miss when you have small children is intelligent debate and stimulating conversation, which this board has in spades.

Very true, Zimmergirl. However, I have a theory that my children's conversational prowess has been heavily impaired by hundreds and hundreds of viewings of The Lion King. I wondered why they enjoyed it so much until my wife pointed out that I speak like Jeremy Irons. That was called an "aren't my kids cute?" story.

Really, I did? What? Am I getting drunker than I think these days?

Four homes in three countries? Well I've got an apartment in LA... pretty cool, huh? Anyways Ian, after this, I've decided to stop responding to your infantile comments. You bring out the worst in me and I don't like how I sound when I respond to your baiting insults. I came here to rib Jeff for breaking Kris' story and you just launch into one of your completely uncalled for tirades again. I'm surprised someone of your mature age would act like such a juvenile brat. But it's nothing I haven't seen before from the 13 year-old talkbackers on AICN. I guess I expected the discourse here to be elevated but you've proven to be truly not worth my time or breath or thoughts or finger movements. I wish you well on your epic mission to be the King Dick of the Hollywood Elsewhere talkbacks. May someone mistake you for Jeremy Irons and maim you for Dungeons and Dragons. Have a good time begging to be noticed by the actual writers on these threads. You're doing a great job so far...

Maybe Kris can take over HE in 10-20 years. By then -- one can hope, can't one? -- he will be a worthy successor to Jeff.

Goodness gracious me, MiraJeff, how I yearn to be one of those "actual writers" like yourself! No doubt these mysterious "finger movements" of yours are involved in some way. Perhaps you might share some quality time with our own, beloved Jeffmcm, who is notorious for some vigorous finger movements of his own.
