It doesn't feel right somehow when guys like Benicio del Toro go on Oprah and do the old turn-on-your-love-light routine. He did it for Susanne Bier's Things We Lost in the Fire, which Paramount is opening on 10.19, but the guy in this photo and the guy he plays in the film are so different it's weird. His real-life personality is another planet also. I've never seen Benicio smile like that ever.

It's funny you bring up Benicio on Oprah because before your glowing review the other day, I had this movie pegged as total Oprah bait. I'm usually wrong about these kinds of things, but that was my first impression.

Maybe it is Oprah bait, but that makes it sound hokey and obvious, and it's not. Not in my book anyway.

Well the deep crows on the sides of his eyes lead me to believe he's been smiling like that his whole life. Maybe you just don't actually know him at all?

Just to be clear, I'm not saying it's hokey and obvious, just that it seemed so until I read your review.
It is possible for something to appeal to Oprah's audience and not suck...right?

Jeff should go easier on Oprah, they agree on Obama after all and Benicio appearing on her show means that thousands more people will see this movie.

Yeah, Oprah gets an unfairly bad wrap. I've seen one episode of her show this year and it featured interviews with both Michael Moore and Cormac McCarthy. She gets behind lots of worthy causes and uses her celebrity to educate people... in an entertaining way. Hell, she just did a show on a movie Jeff really liked (Things We Lose...) so what's with the negativity?

I've got no beef with the lady, but I'm not her target demo. Went out of my way to see her interview Letterman. It was great.

I used to be an Oprah detractor, and then I saw her courageous tour-de-force performance in Beloved. I know many aren't a fan of this film, but I can't imagine anyone playing that role better than she did. I'd pretty much forgive her for anything at this point. Well, except for helping Crash win Best Picture.

Stop hatin' on my girl. She's a fucking genius markateer, and she's supported some pretty awesome stuff. She also knows to say when she's been duped (James F. anyone?) and Del Toro is nobody's fool. If he and Berry being on her show helps people see this amazing film, more power to her and them. How the fuck is "Oprah bait" hokey and obvious anyway? Shit, the woman admitted to LOVING "The Wedding Crashers."

I respect Oprah for her vast empire, but I hold her responsible for quack Dr. Phil and pimping that awful "The Secret" bs...

Not for you, Jeff. He only turns on his love light for the ladies.

Christian, what precisely is wrong with Dr.Phil? On the times when I've been at my mother's home to watch him, I've actually found him to be tough and full of good advise. I mean he's obviously not qualified to be doing what he's doing, but I think he does more good than harm. Plus his solutions are blissfully free of Jesus/God.
"The Secret", however, is a dangerous crock of shit.

Dr. Phil is crap pop psychology for housewives. His homilies are rote and cliched and if you think he's actually helping people instead of exploiting them...
Plus, what does this big ol' Texas meat-eater know about dieting that he pimps "Dr. Phil Diet Supplements"? He knows nothing which is why he was sued -- and settled -- over their lack of dietary value:
Los Angeles - Unhappy customers who sued Dr Phil McGraw over his now discontinued Shape Up! diet plan have reached a $10.5m settlement agreement with the TV psychologist, an attorney for the plaintiffs said.
The lawsuit, filed in 2004 on behalf of three disappointed consumers, claimed McGraw defrauded fans with his yearlong venture into the diet supplement business, making false statements about the pills. McGraw has denied the allegations and admitted no wrongdoing or misrepresentation in the settlement.

CJ is spot on. It's major Oprah bait because Oprah loves and supports Halle Berry. Oprah's the best. She is also behind Obama so you know, Jeff, you ought to embrace your inner Oprah.
