Darjeeling music

I could run a list of ten things I like or at least admire about The Darjeeling Limited (which I may do tomorrow -- could a slightly positive backlash be manifesting?), but there's nothing but good vibrations on the soundtrack, and I almost never mention CDs in this column in any context. (Unless it's a new Springsteen album.)

Eddie Vedder soundtrack from Into The Wild is chicken soup for the ears. So sez everybody about da Boss' new album.

I'm really liking track 8, Shankar Jaikishan's tune from "Bombay Talkie."

Can't wait to see how it's used in the film.

Mick: If you're grooving on "Bombay Talkie," you are absolutely going to love this movie. Anderson uses the song twice to great effect. Get ready to push the repeat button every time you hear it after seeing the film. In its own way, it's this movie's equivalent of Creation's "Making Time" from "Rushmore."

Everyone has a different 'Most Memorable Song' from Rushmore.

Don't think I've seen that for any other film.

The film is full of good vibrations and the soundtrack is a huge part of that.

This might strike some as a horrible idea, but for a change of pace, why doesn't Wes Anderson actually make a movie about The Kinks? It's got everything he loves, '60s atmosphere, brotherly conflict, great music. Plus they're very underrated so it would be a great service to music lovers everywhere.

Bruce Springsteen's MAGIC is the best album of the year so far. I would definitely put it up there with BORN TO RUN, DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN, and BORN IN THE U.S.A. Rolling Stone gave it 5 stars.

RS gives everything Bruce does 5 stars. FYI: RS is shit and lost any cred at least 20 yrs ago. Also, hate to break it to you, but Wilco's SKY BLUE SKY is, so far, the pick of the year. It's a band looking both back and forward and making the most amazingly beautifully crafted R&R of this year. Don't believe me? Check out "Impossible germany" and tell me it sucks.

I like Brendan O'Brien and I like the boss, but the sound they create together I'm not sold on. It just seems over the top to me; the lyrics seem to suffer. Writing shouldn't be telling you what its literally talking about, especially in music when you can manifest your own tone.... I just want to hear some rythym... that seems like right out of the Mutt Lange handbook for banal pop music.

It may take awhile for the post-Aquatic backlash to wear off for good, but in time, Darjeeling will be seen as Anderson's finest film since Rushmore. That's not to say it's perfect, only that it represents a significant step away from the insularity of Tenenbaums and Aquatic, and toward something more real and character-focused, even as it still demonstrates Anderson's mastery of mood, music, and decor. It's a surprisingly touching picture, and one of the year's funniest. Loved it.

I completely agree, gatsby. I saw it last night at the Aero screening and I think this is the film to bring back the fans he lost with his last two (which is not to say I was among them). It's intimate and surprisingly raw for a Wes film, and also, possibly his strongest work from a visual storytelling perspective.

So what, no HE reports on Wes wading into the hoi polloi last night?

"Rolling Stone gave it 5 stars."

RS also put Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears on the cover. They lost street cred right around 1981. But then Springsteen's "magic" has always been lost on me. Not that I don't respect the guy, I'm just not into working class bar blues. But that's me.

I think Wes managed to escape without getting any hoi or polloi on him.

A woman in the audience did seem to go into orgasmic convulsions when he name dropped 400 Blows though...or was it something else? I don't remember.

I'll be interested to hear what the people who've gotten bored of Anderson's schtick think. It's such a simple and gentle and sweet movie I can't imagine really hating it, but you never know.

I don't know if I liked it as well as Tenenbaums but it went down easier than Aquatic. There was never a moment that dragged for me, even a little. And it never felt excessive which Aquatic did much as I liked it.

I'm kind of piecing together a review of the whole thing in my head right now, but since you asked...

First of all, I'm just a guy who likes the movies so it came as a small surprise that there is actually a core group of people for whom Wes Anderson is something of a fashion statement. I don't want to say there's a Wes Anderson uniform or anything, but there was a definite type...a vibe...I call them The Urban Nerd. They were out in force. It's fun though to see a piece of work with a receptive, enthusiastic, appreciative audience.

Hotel Chevalier screened first joined with an intertitle to The Darjeeling Limited which was cool. There were several direct references between the two so it's good to see them together.

Wes did the Q&A afterwards with Roman Coppola and Wally Wolodarsky, but Wes did most of the talking. Not the most articulate character, at least on the spot in front of an audience and the questions were a mixed bag.

The most interesting thing part was when he was asked why he hadn't been writing with Owen Wilson. He said basically because Owen became a movie star and it just wasn't doable, but that they'd found other ways to work together. He said he loved working with him and they've talked about writing stuff in the future.

He was pretty generous in crediting the input of both Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman. He made it sound very much like the movie grew from a lot of input from all three of them.

Several questioners touched on the music in his movies but he never really got into it. I wanted to ask myself, but my aversion to public humiliation kept me silent.

Silverlake is ground zero.

Have you had a chance to see the complete Hotel Chevalier yet? Google video has a copy here, but it looks awful. There must be other better ones out there and you should definitely see it before you catch Darjeeling.
