Hammond's

Pete Hammond's latest Envelope column is one of his horse-race commentaries -- what's starting to take shape, what cards the players are holding, etc. The photo of Cate Blanchett (sitting to the right of the article) raises a question, though -- one that's bothering me more and more every week that it's sidestepped or ignored.

When are handicappers going to stand up and declare Blanchett's (or her handers') attempt to land a Best Actress nomination for Elizabeth: The Golden Age a lost cause because the movie is an absolute joke in the eyes of anyone with a smidgen of taste? (Even Oscar-watchers with bad taste or no backbone have come to accept this.) And that Blanchett's only shot is a Best Supporting Actress nom for her genius-level Bob Dylan performance in Todd Haynes' I'm Not There?

Not going to happen, of course. The best chance for decent DVD play is to have "Oscar nominated performance" on the box.

For someone who considers himself a maverick and one who thinks outside the box I'm surprised you always want people to join in a herd. Let's face it, yours and Oscar's taste are very far apart. Actress is not very strong this year. Jodie Foster, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Julie Christie and Cate Blanchett seems like a good lineup to me. The only one that could bump one of those is Angelina. Halle Berry too. But despite Elizabeth's bad reviews, Blanchett herself has gotten great reviews.

You don't see the combination of a vulnerable Best Actress field (thanks to so many of the greater performances being in small films like "La Vie En Rose"); the buzz she'll carry from "I'm Not There"; and the memory of Blanchett's work in the first Elizabeth russeling in the minds of voters who might not even see this one all adding up to her being nominated in both categories? She doesn't HAVE to be great in The Golden Age to garner the fourth or fifth slot (or even the third).

If the nominators are having any trouble finishing their top five Best Actress ballots, and they maybe just put her in the Supporting Actress box for the Dylan movie, it is scary easy to imagine them thinking, "Ah, there you go: Cate again. All done!".

I hear she's a lesbian in Elizabeth, but in "I'm Not There," watching Cate's Bob get turned on by Michelle Williams' is really something.

She will be nominated because she's Cate Blanchett, and she plays a British monarch....
Whether or not the film itself is actually good is totally irrelevant here.

the film is certainly not best pic material - but it is entertaining - and Blanchett is great in it - it is the sort of film that in the 50's and 60's would have been hailed as a great epic - we all know oscar noms/wins are not all about the performance - lots of other factors enter in - and there are worse people who could be nominated than Cate Blanchett - who is a fine actor - not your typical H Wood chick - takes risks - and has given many fine performances - and yeah - she was robbed back when the first Elizabeth came out - plus it seems Cate is truly gonna limit her film performances - her next role is in Shakespeare's War of the Roses cycle - not your typical H Wood actress fare -

Any organization that can give the Oscar to Elizabeth Taylor for "Butterfield 8" can at least nominate Cate for this performance.

Did I miss it because Hammond doesn't actually say anywhere in his piece that Blanchet has a good chance of being nominated for Best Actress.

Jodie Foster? For what? "The Brave One"? You've gotta be kidding me. I'd go with Streep or Knightley -- heck, I'd go with Katherine Heigl -- before I put Foster in that group.

ELIZABETH isn't golden, but it's better than some of the stuff that's floated for Oscars around these parts. (The two-part HBO/BBC Mirren miniseries stole its thunder.) Still, I doubt it will sway the Academy, save perhaps for the wonderful costumes.

I just got around to seeing "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," and while it's not as good as the first one, and some of the dialogue sounds like it was taken off a greating card, it's still a shamelessly entertaining period soap opera. It's not bad...calling it an absolute joke and giving a pass to the absolutely rancid "Heartbreak Kid" is a bit questionable. "Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer" was a joke. "Elizabeth" is no masterpiece...but there are MUCH worse films out there. And Cate is simply stunning as always...she should have won for the original. I'm still pulling for Marion Cotillard though. No one else this year has even come close.

Sorry I'm reading the script presently to make sure I wasn't just in a bad mood when I was dragged to it. It's a joke. "I won't punish my people for their own beliefs. Only their deeds." How relevant!
