"In her acid flashback of a new book, 'For Love of Politics,' Sally Bedell Smith describes how First Lady Hillary routinely unmanned Bill and his aides, and engaged in sharp spurts of temper that sparked his temper.
"'Hillary's anger was bound up in the intricacies of her marital bargain, which engendered rivalry and resentment along with mutual dependence,' Ms. Smith writes. Political power was her reward for his marital infidelity.
"When Bill explains why Hillary should be president, his subtext is clear: We owe it to her for all she put up with from me." -- from today's (10.21) <strong>Maureen Dowd/N.Y. Times column, titled "Cougars, Archers, Snipers."

Bullshit. Power was her reward for marrying him in the first place. When he got down on his knee he was probably saying "Look baby, the Wallaces did it. I get my turn, then you get yours."

Forget that harridan's book. I'm reading Arthur Schlesinger's "Journals 1952-2000."
And here's a joke for Larry:
Q: How many Classical Liberals does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: Yes, because it's the right thing to do.

Some people may have liked Ronald Reagan, but presidents generally don't get elected because people like them. They generally get elected because people think they're tough bastards. A lot of people hated Richard Nixon, and hardly anyone liked him, but he got elected twice.
It's the same the world over with women who have been elected president or prime minister. Golda Meir, Benazir Bhutto, Indira Ghandi, and Margaret Thatcher didn't rise to power because people thought they were sweet beautiful frail flowers.

Nemo, Nixon was elected, I believe, because the democrats were so weak. . Plus, it helps a war was going on at the same time. No war...no Nixon, either time. Don't think so? Just look at the last presidential election. And just wait 'til next year, when the republicans will do everything, fair and unfair, to try to knock down Hillary. Just turn on Fox News, and you can see it already beginning. That's why you see see Bill Clinton on the campaign trail with Hillary. I said it before: He can add about 2 to 3 million extra votes for her, which would put her over the top. Don't think so? It's already starting on the you-know-who radio shows. It's going to be a nasty, personal fight. Can't wait!

Not only that, between his five races for national office, Nixon was voted for by more Americans than anyone else, ever.
So no, he wasn't elected because the Democrats were weak, he was elected because people wanted him to kick hippie and Commie ass.

It shifted from General Eisenhower to someone called Ike, who embodied certain aspects of General Eisenhower and certain aspects of affection for General Eisenhower. From "like," all you could see was other Americans engaged in a process resembling the processes of intimacy. This was a comfort.

Mgmax, that was funny. Kicking the hippie's and the commies's asses! So what he got a lot of votes. I'm sure he wasn't thinking that when, I don't know, watergate happened. Also, in the 60's, he had the look of a 50's guy, with the suit and tie, looking constanly pissed off. And don't forget the sweating.

So Hillary is a tough, determined broad who doesn't take shit from men. And that's a negative in a leader? Tell that to Margaret Thatcher.

George and Lurleen Wallace, both of whom served as Governor of Alabama. It's not the precedent for this situation since she ran as a surrogate for him after he was barred from seeking a consecutive third term. Also she died in office.
Everyone who's been making points about how we elect tough bastards/bitches is exactly right on. Hillary is a tough broad as they say, right in the Thatcher mold (not politically, mind you).

Instead he went down in history as one of the most corrupt and disgraced presidents ever.
He ended up kicking his own ass!

Who are the Wallaces? There's a generation gap on this blog. However, the comparison is not exactly analogous. Hillary is her own person, and Lurleen was a southern fried proxy.
These stories about temper, marital discord and power are more reasons to be apprehensive about Hillary. She is a brilliant woman, devoid of intuition, and tone deaf in a lot of settings. Her presidency would be all mixed up, wheel churning, and full of infighting and party clashes. The economy will be very bad, and there will still be great potential for terrorism. I see disaster, for the whole country and the Democratic party. (I am a liberal.)
Obama, for all his law review brilliance and smooth style, lacks gravitas and trenchancy. Edwards is more or less a suit of a trial lawyer, with low key persuasive skills and good looks.
Despite heavy odds in their favor, the Democrats are in trouble. Rudy or Mitt could win it.
Richard Nixon was a crook. The whole country was up in arms. Bush & Cheney are much more virulent, nefarious people and the country is relatively quiet. And as much as I disliked Nixon, he was so much more a statesmen than the current regime.

Cynical as I am about out choices, the Republicans are in bigger trouble. Between Rudy and Mitt and their flip-flopping values, they'll be easy to take out in debates and once the media/public hear comes down. They have nothing to offer the country except more hands off robber baron capitalism and full on religious war.
Americans want a change and they'll elect a Democrat to the White House just for new deal, as what happened with Carter after Nixon/Ford. Hillary does suck tho.
